The Toyota Yaris has been in production since 1999. It’s a subcompact car that was also sold under the nameplate Toyota Echo in non-Japanese markets. It is currently sold in Japan, Europe, Mexico, South America, Australia & New Zealand.

The Yaris has seating for five and is available with an automatic or manual transmission.

The current model features auto-on/off LED headlights that automatically turn on and off depending on the time of the day.

A headlight bulb is a light source that emits light for the purpose of illuminating the way ahead. The two most common types of bulbs are incandescent and halogen headlights, but because of their inefficiency many modern cars have begun to use LED or HID lights instead.

The headlights on Toyota Yaris are adorned with a separate bulb known as the 9005 (HB3) single beam/halogen headlight bulb. The 9005 is a very common bulb and can be found at most hardware/auto parts stores. The low beam uses one 90 watt bulb, while the high beam uses two 40 watt bulbs. An error has been seen with some cars where the high beams are not functioning properly. The 9005 uses an H13 adapter to allow it to be installed in most cars.

Bulb types used

The 2006-2018 Toyota Yaris uses the 9003 bulb type for its high beam and low beam headlights. For the fog lights, it uses the H8, H11, or H16.

Upgrading from factory bulbs to aftermarket LED/HID

Before you upgrade from your factory bulbs to aftermarket LED/HID lights, it’s important to check with your state laws. This ensures that vehicle specifications comply with the type and color of headlights officially permitted. It’s also important to familiarize yourself with the bulb sizes and cost implications. A typical LED unit can cost you anywhere from $125 to $1000.

The most important consideration when upgrading to LED headlights is the brightness. Different makes and models offer different levels of illumination. If you’re looking for maximum output, buy a unit that specifies its lumen count. The higher the lumens, the brighter your LED will be.

Another factor to consider is beam patterns. Some LED headlights produce a wide floodlight while others emit a more focused beam. It’s important to decide what kind of beam pattern you need before making your purchase.

Most aftermarket LED headlights are available in either 6000K or 8000K color temperatures. The difference between the two is that 6000K produces a bright white light while 8000K emits a blue-tinged light. Choose the color temperature according to your preferences.

Finally, you’ll need to choose between beam pattern options like driving/fog, off-road and special application lights. Special applications are useful in fog or when driving alongside large vehicles with high beams on. Fog lights produce a wide beam that is useful in foggy conditions while driving lights emit a focused beam up ahead for increased visibility in the dark.

Advantages of upgrading headlights

  1. HIDs and LEDs are more energy-efficient.
  2. They are also easier to install.
  3. They offer different styles, providing great aesthetics.
  4. HIDs and LEDs last longer than halogen lamps.
  5. They do not dazzle oncoming traffic, hence, improve safety on the road.

How to choose the correct bulb size of LED/HID lamp

There are several resources that help car owners identify their bulb part numbers and sizes. Carry out your search on our website, you may need to indicate your vehicle’s year of manufacture and type. This will help fetch all the information required. Other possible options include the following:

  • Check your factory bulbs

When upgrading your halogen bulbs to LED/HIDs, remember to check the bulb size/part number on the factory bulbs before discarding them. This helps to determine what bulb size you should get for your new bulbs.

  • Consult your user manual

As you peruse through your vehicle’s manual, you will find a subsection for bulb sizes under the vehicle maintenance section. This will provide all the necessary details that you might need before getting new bulbs.

  • Call your car dealer or manufacturer

Car manufacturers and dealers normally have all the information you need regarding a vehicle’s replacement parts. You can call either to inquire about the correct bulb size for your headlights. Have your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) written somewhere as you may need to provide it.

Installing new bulbs

To replace a burnt-out headlight bulb on your Toyota Yaris, start by using a flathead screwdriver to pry the plastic cap off of the headlight assembly.

The size of the plastic cap varies from vehicle to vehicle. You will need a different-sized screwdriver for each size cap. Once the cap has been removed, you can access and remove the wiring connector that connects to the back of the light bulb.

Push down on tab while pulling connector apart from a light bulb. You must pull hard enough to release connectors’ grip – but not so hard as to bend any components inside either piece or break either piece off completely.

With both pieces disconnected, you can now remove the old bulb and push in a new one.

Re-attach the wiring connector and push the plastic cap back into place. Test lights to ensure bulbs are both working properly. A screwdriver can be used to replace more than one bulb (i.e., passenger side, driver side).
