Replacing your Toyota 4Runner ’s parking light, headlight, or turning signal can be time-consuming. Especially if you need to find the right replacement size.
Replacement options for your headlamp bulb include: Xenon Headlamp kit, High-Intensity Discharge Headlight Kit, and LED Headlights. Those for your interior lighting bulbs include SMD bulbs and LED bulbs. We’ll go through each product type and the colors available.
Xenon Headlamps [plastic headlight housings] do cost more than Halogen bulbs because they use Xenon Gas, but the benefits far outweigh the cost savings. Benefits of using Xenon Headlights include: increased visibility through a whiter light, closer color temperature to natural sunlight, and an average life of 100,000 hours (compared to 1/2 that for halogens). These types of headlights come in white and blue and you can typically find them at most stores such as AutoZone and Pepboys; however since their popularity has increased you’ll want to try online retailers for better pricing. The average price is around $6 per bulb compared to $4 for halogens.
High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Headlights consist of a blue bulb surrounded by an orange coating. It’s more expensive than Xenon headlights, but you’ll get 6X the life and visibility compared to Halogen bulbs. You can also get HIDs in colors other than blue such as green and purple; however these are specialty lights typically used only on off-road vehicles or projectors that don’t use reflectors. The average price is $12 US per bulb compared to $4 for halogens.
Our final type of headlight is actually LED headlights which actually work out cheaper than either Xenon or High Intensity Discharge lights when you consider their average lifespan is 50,000 hours. This is especially true when you take into consideration that they produce no heat whatsoever and use 1/10th the energy of HIDs or halogens. The only downside to LED headlights is that they’re typically red which means color-blind people won’t be able to see them at night.

Xenon Headlight Kits
Xenon Headlight kits are one of the most common option for aftermarket headlamp replacement. Xenon headlights are brighter, last longer, and use less energy than halogens.
Xentec HID is a popular choice among Toyota 4Runner owners. The part number for this kit is 4050300HID. This includes two pieces: an H11N high-intensity discharge (Xenon) bulb and ballast that can be wired into your existing electrical system or you can get the entire assembly installed by specialist.
The installation is fairly straight forward with almost no modification required. First, you will have to access the back of your headlight assembly to remove the halogen bulb.
After that, insert the Xenon bulb into place and secure with a new gasket. Then plug in the ballast to avoid any moisture damage. You can also purchase wiring adapters if you are planning to do this yourself.
Some users that already done HID retrofitting may also want to consider getting low beam filter for their projector lens, as it can help reduce light scatter during night driving.
Xenon headlights provides surround lighting at all angles which improves safety especially when driving around sharp curves or on hilly roads at night or inclement weather conditions.
Why not get Rid of that dull halogen headlight? Our favorite is Kensun’s HID low beam headlights .
High Intensity Discharge Headlight Kit
High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlight kits produce a brighter and more intense light than traditional halogen headlights.
The color of light produced by HIDs is often compared to daylight, making the vehicle more visible in extreme weather conditions and at night.
One of the reasons why HIDs are becoming more popular is because they use about 35-40% less power, allowing for greater performance.
While HID lights offer superior lighting over halogen lamps, there are several downsides to these headlights.
HID bulbs run much hotter than halogens and require special cooling systems that include vents, fans and liquid cooling plates. This makes them noisier than standard headlights.
They also must be paired with a high-voltage ballast which may cause radio interference in some vehicles. While most modern electronics can easily adapt to this interference, many older cars cannot. And since the ballasts are wired directly into the headlight circuit, any problem with the ballast will render both of your headlights inoperable.
Another downside is that HIDs need a longer time to reach full brightness, which can be dangerous at night, especially for older drivers who may not be able to see as well.
Some cars with dimmer switches don’t work properly with aftermarket HID kits because the lights aren’t bright enough when turned on low beam and too dark when turned up high. Finally, even though they don’t burn out like halogen bulbs, they do suffer from shortened life spans which means you’ll have to keep replacing them every 2-3 years.
Headlight kits such as Hella’s eXtra series or Kensun’s Xenon HID kit are great options for replacement.
Best LED Headlights
LED headlights have become increasingly popular over the last few years as a direct replacement for factory bulbs.
They’re bright, cheap, available in many colors, and plug in to your factory headlight sockets.
But when it comes to replacing the reverse lights, many people are left in the dark about how these LED bulbs can cause problems when installed incorrectly.
The issue is usually caused by installing an LED bulb with a polarity protection diode into your car’s taillight socket.
The fact that they don’t work when inserted backwards isn’t the problem; The problem comes in when you try to fix them without knowing what made them stop working in the first place.
If you’ve ever tried changing out the factory reverse light bulbs only to find that they no longer function properly after installing LEDs , this article should help clear things up .
LEDs draw less power than factory incandescent taillights. The factory reverse bulb operates on 12 volts, and draws approximately 0.1 amps (0.12 watts) .
The brightness of the LED replacement bulb similarly decreases when it’s connected to a lower voltage source. A standard LED, operating at 3 volts , is about 20% dimmer than at 12 volts .
These features make them less attractive as automotive reverse lights: The low draw means they usually aren’t bright enough to illuminate much more than your license plate, even when they function properly.
A typical taillight circuit consists of three wires running through your car’s tail light sockets: Live(+) , earth ground , and taillight filament (+).
Diode Dynamics is a popular option here . Kensun also offers high-quality LED headlights that are DOT approved and plug in directly without any modifications needed.
LED bulbs for your interior lighting kit may be the way to go if you’re looking for brighter lights, less energy consumption, and longer life time than stock halogen bulbs.
It is fairly common that when people switch to LED exterior bulbs they need to change their interior bulbs as well since they will no longer fit in the socket due to difference in size or connector type.
Replacement options include: SMD , T10 Wedge Base, Bayonet Base, PAR16 PAR20 PAR30 , and even the incredibly popular T20 Wedge base.
SMD LED’s are brighter than both bayonet or wedge bulbs, but not as bright as the higher-wattage ones such as PAR30 or PAR36; they fit in all standard bulb sockets with no modifications needed to your 4Runner.
SMD bulbs are one of the most common choice for aftermarket interior lighting upgrade. They also make great side marker lights since they stick out nicely from the housing and would be perfect for that purpose.
For Toyota 4Runner owners we recommend looking into this option.
Fog lights are used to help provide better illumination when driving in foggy conditions or near the area where your high beams don’t reach.
The fog light will cut through the heavier fog but not too far away allowing for safe distant viewing. There are two styles of Toyota 4Runner foglights: factory OEM halogen style and aftermarket projector style.
You can upgrade your factory-installed Halogens into HIDs or Xenon Bulbs with this kit which includes an H11 plug n’ play wire harness adapter.
This lets you install true high-performance HID or LED fog lights, driving lights and driving lamps in your 4Runner for improved visibility . Another option is UFO Fog Light Kit .
This Xenon HID Fog Lamp Kit includes everything you need to upgrade your fog lights. This is a plug-and-play system, making it easy to install in about 1 hour .
This 4Runner Fog Light wiring harness adapter is designed to enable the installation of aftermarket or replacement fog light bulbs.
It will fit any vehicles equipped with factory halogen headlights (H11/9003/HB3) by opening up the connector housing and installing this pins inside.
The pins are color coded to match standard Japanese automotive plugs; simply attach the correct color wires according to your vehicle’s wiring diagram and tighten the screw terminals! T20 WEDGE LED Bulbs for Reading Lights
LED bulbs can be as reading lights too, which can come in very handy on camping trips or anytime you need some extra illumination.
LED lights are also much better at illuminating the area than florescent tube lights or standard incandescent bulbs . You can install them yourself by swapping out your factory bulb with an LED one , it takes less than 5 minutes!
Third Brake Light/Tailgate Bulb Replacement
Replacing the third brake light and tailgate led lamp will give your rear end a whole new look. It’s fairly easy to do with the right tools, you just have to remove two bolts from each side of the tail gate, push up on it and then disconnect the wiring harness.
There is just a matter of removing 8 bolts in total, the light assembly slides right out. The actual light is just a regular T20 bulb that can be replaced by undoing two bolts.
Third Brake Light/Tailgate Replacement LED
If you’re the type of person that likes to find the easiest route in doing things, then these are the perfect replacement for your 3rd brake light.
The kit comes with four 194 wedge SMD bulbs so it will be a true plug and play installation . Keep in mind that if your tailgate has integrated running lights on top of being a third brake light, you may have to get rid of them by disconnecting the wires under the tailgate cap.
If you decide to go this route just let us know what kind of challenge you ran into while installing it. We would love to hear about your experience! Here’s way of adding external lighting or maybe a backup camera.
Side Mirror LED Light Bars Installation
If you’re into mounting led lights on your car , then you might want to check this out. It’s a very easy installation that requires only two 3M double sided adhesive pads.
Installing these light bars will make it easier for other drivers to see you from the sides while driving at night, especially if they are coming from behind . Here’s how you replace the turn signal bulbs in your Toyota 4Runner 2016-2018 model .
You should also get this wiring harness made by DIY AutoTruck if you’re going to be adding some extra lighting. There is no need to splice wire or tap into any wires, just plug and go! This harness will give you a better, cleaner and brighter turn signal light.
Front Turn Signal/Fog Light LED Bulbs
If your fog lights or front turn signals are not as bright as they used to be, you might want to take a look at these LED bulbs . They can be installed in less than 5 minutes and will provide much brighter illumination than the OEM bulbs.
The installation is so easy that it doesn’t require any tools! Just pop out your clear lens covers and put those bad boys in and you’re done!
These won’t damage your wiring harness like other brands would because there is no need for extra relays or error canceling resistors. You could also reverse this if you wanted to go back to the OEM yellow color .
Back Up Light LED Bulbs
Apart from the other extra lighting you can add to your Toyota 4Runner , this LED kit will come in handy if you need additional light while backing up.
The installation process is very easy and straightforward, just replace the original bulb with TOYOTA T20 WEDGE LED Bulbs for Back Up Lights .
These are bright white bulbs so they are perfect for seeing everything behind your car. They are made by Diode Dynamics which is a company that specializes in automotive LED lights.
All of their products come with a lifetime warranty. They come in such a bright white color it will make everything behind you pop up! You can also add these to your tailgate and third brake light for a cool and clean effect.
