Rear Turn Signal Bulbs: What They Do and How to Replace Them
Rear turn signal bulbs are also called rear indicator bulbs, rear direction indicator bulbs, blinkers, or rear signal lights. In the US, “turn signal” and “blinker” are common terms. In the UK and many other markets, the same light is usually called a rear indicator or direction indicator. These terms generally describe the lamp that flashes on the left or right rear of the vehicle to show an intended turn or lane change. They are different from hazard lights, although the same bulbs flash when the hazard warning system is activated.
What the Rear Turn Signal Does
The rear turn signal communicates your driving intentions to traffic behind you. When you move the turn-signal lever left or right, the corresponding rear lamp flashes, usually together with the matching front signal and, on some vehicles, a side marker or mirror-mounted signal. Pressing the hazard switch normally makes both sides flash.
A rear signal may be a separate lamp, or it may share a housing and bulb with the brake and tail lights. On combination lamps, one bulb can contain separate circuits for dim tail-light operation and brighter brake or turn-signal operation. Some vehicles use a separate amber signal section, while others use a red rear lamp that flashes for both braking and turning.
Where the Bulb Is Located
The rear turn signal is typically inside the left or right tail-light assembly at the rear corner of the vehicle. Depending on the design, access may be through the trunk, cargo area, liftgate, or rear wheel-well area. Many assemblies have a removable access panel and a bulb socket that twists out of the housing. Others require removal of the entire tail-light assembly.
Do not assume that the outermost rear bulb is the turn signal. A vehicle may have separate bulbs for the brake light, tail light, reverse light, and signal, or it may use one multi-function bulb. The owner’s manual, a vehicle-specific bulb catalog, or the markings on the original bulb can confirm the position.
Common Bulb Technologies and Families
Older and less expensive vehicles commonly use replaceable incandescent bulbs. These bulbs contain one or two filaments and are available in several wedge-base and bayonet-base designs. Examples frequently used in rear signal applications include bulb families such as 1156, 1157, 3156, 3157, 7440, and 7443. These are examples only, not universal replacements. A bulb with a similar-looking base may have different contacts, pin locations, filament functions, wattage, or physical dimensions.
Many newer vehicles use factory LED rear signals. Some have a replaceable LED bulb, but others use an integrated LED circuit board or a sealed lamp assembly. Integrated units normally require replacement of the specified module or the entire assembly rather than a conventional bulb.
Halogen-style incandescent signal bulbs are also found in some applications, although “halogen” is not a reliable way to identify a replacement. Aftermarket LED replacement bulbs are available for some incandescent systems. They may offer quicker illumination, lower power consumption, and a longer service life, but they are not automatically compatible with every vehicle.
How to Find the Correct Rear Turn Signal Bulb Size
Actual fitment depends on the vehicle’s make, model, year, trim level, market, and lighting configuration. The safest method is to check the owner’s manual or a reputable vehicle-specific bulb finder using the exact vehicle information and the rear turn signal position.
- Remove the old bulb and read the printed code on its glass or metal base, if the marking is still visible.
- Compare the base style, number of contacts, pin arrangement, overall length, and bulb shape.
- Check whether the vehicle uses a single-filament or dual-filament bulb.
- Confirm whether the signal requires an amber bulb, a clear bulb behind an amber lens, or a red bulb for a red lamp.
- Verify the bulb’s voltage and wattage, not just a similar part number.
Do not select a bulb solely because it fits the socket. Some bulbs physically install but illuminate the wrong circuit or produce an incorrect flash rate. A parts catalog may list several options for one vehicle because production changes, regional specifications, and optional LED packages can affect fitment.
Replacement Considerations
Turn off the ignition and lights before replacing a conventional bulb. Allow the lamp to cool, then access the socket according to the vehicle’s instructions. Avoid touching the glass of a halogen or incandescent bulb with bare fingers; oil residue can create hot spots and shorten its life. If contact occurs, clean the glass with an appropriate solvent and let it dry before installation.
Inspect the socket for corrosion, melted plastic, loose terminals, or water intrusion. A new bulb will not solve a poor electrical connection. Clean minor corrosion carefully, but replace damaged sockets or repair wiring when necessary. Check the tail-light gasket and housing for cracks or leaks so moisture does not damage the replacement.
After installation, test the left and right turn signals, hazard lights, brake lights, tail lights, and reverse lights. Make sure the bulb is fully seated and that the flash rate is normal. A bulb that flashes rapidly, often called hyperflashing, may indicate a failed bulb, incorrect wattage, an LED conversion without a compatible flasher or resistor, or a vehicle control-module issue.
LED Upgrade Issues and Common Mistakes
LED replacements must match the socket and electrical requirements of the vehicle. Some vehicles monitor bulb current and may report a bulb-out warning or flash rapidly after an LED installation. A load resistor, LED-compatible flasher, or vehicle-specific coding may be needed, but resistors generate significant heat and must be mounted safely on a metal surface away from wiring and plastic.
Choose an LED with the correct light color and sufficient brightness. Installing a white LED behind a clear or red lens may produce an unsuitable color, while an amber signal should remain visibly amber through the lamp. Avoid overly bright or poorly focused products that create glare or do not illuminate the reflector correctly. Also check local regulations before modifying an exterior signal.
If the signal remains inoperative after a correct bulb replacement, check the fuse, socket, ground connection, wiring, turn-signal switch, flasher, and body control module. A complete LED assembly may require diagnostic testing rather than a simple bulb change.
