Trunk light bulbs and cargo light bulbs are also called trunk lamps, cargo area lights, luggage compartment lights, hatch light bulbs, or boot light bulbs. “Boot light” is the common UK term, while “trunk light” is more common in the US. Search terms such as trunk bulb replacement, cargo lamp bulb size, hatchback cargo light, and interior luggage light bulb may describe the same vehicle light position.
This light illuminates the storage area when you open the trunk, hatch, liftgate, or rear doors. It helps you load groceries, locate tools, find luggage, and inspect the cargo floor in low-light conditions. It is an interior convenience light, not an exterior lamp and not a substitute for the vehicle’s brake lights, tail lights, or license plate lights.
Where the Trunk or Cargo Light Is Located
The light is usually mounted in a small plastic housing on a side trim panel, the rear quarter panel, the cargo-area roof, the hatchback side wall, or the underside of the liftgate. Some vehicles use a lamp built into the cargo trim or a removable flashlight-style unit. SUVs and vans may have several cargo lamps, including lights on both side panels or separate lamps for the rear passenger and loading areas.
A door, hatch, or liftgate switch normally turns the lamp on automatically. Depending on the vehicle, a dashboard interior-light setting may also control it. Some cargo lights have a manual on/off switch, while others use a timer that turns the light off after the vehicle is locked or the battery-saving system activates.
Common Bulb Technologies and Families
Older and simpler cargo lamps commonly use a replaceable incandescent bulb. The bulb may be a small wedge-base design or a tubular festoon bulb with metal contacts at both ends. Common automotive families can include 168/194-style miniature wedge bulbs, 912/921-style wedge bulbs, and festoon bulbs in lengths such as 31 mm, 36 mm, or 39 mm. These are examples only; the same vehicle nameplate may use a different bulb depending on its year, trim, market, lamp housing, or factory lighting package.
Many newer vehicles use a plug-in LED bulb, an LED module, or a complete lamp assembly with LEDs permanently mounted to a circuit board. Factory LED cargo lamps may not have a separately replaceable bulb. In that case, the correct replacement may be the entire housing or module rather than a bulb. Some vehicles also use surface-mount LEDs that require electronic repair or replacement of the complete unit.
Incandescent bulbs provide warm light and are inexpensive, but they use more power and generate more heat. LED replacements generally use less electrical power, last longer, and produce brighter or whiter light. However, LED performance depends on the housing, lens, beam pattern, color temperature, and available clearance.
How to Find the Correct Bulb Size
Do not choose a trunk bulb by appearance alone. Actual fitment depends on the vehicle’s make, model, year, trim, market, and lighting configuration. The fastest reliable methods are to check the owner’s manual, use a reputable parts catalog with the full vehicle information, or compare the number printed on the original bulb with a verified replacement listing.
- Identify every cargo lamp if the vehicle has more than one. Different locations may use different bulbs.
- Remove the lens carefully and inspect the old bulb, socket, base, and overall length.
- Record the bulb number, base style, voltage, wattage, and festoon length when applicable.
- Confirm that the replacement fits the housing and socket, not just that it has a similar bulb code.
- Check whether the vehicle uses a replaceable bulb or an integrated LED assembly.
Before removing trim or a lamp housing, switch the light off and allow an incandescent bulb to cool. If you disconnect a battery or electrical connector, follow the vehicle service instructions, especially on vehicles with alarm systems, power liftgates, or sensitive electronic modules.
Replacement and LED Upgrade Considerations
Use the original bulb’s voltage and wattage unless the manufacturer specifies an approved alternative. A higher-wattage incandescent bulb can overheat the socket, wiring, or plastic lens. A bulb that is too long or too wide may prevent the lens from snapping back into place or may press against the housing.
When upgrading to LED, choose the correct base and physical size first. Then consider brightness, color, polarity, and heat management. Some LED bulbs work only when installed in one direction; if the lamp does not illuminate, remove it, rotate it 180 degrees, and test again. Choose a moderate color temperature if you want useful cargo illumination rather than a harsh blue appearance.
Most basic interior cargo lamps do not require a CAN bus-compatible LED, but some vehicles monitor interior circuits or use electronic dimming. If the lamp flickers, stays faintly illuminated, produces a warning, or causes unusual battery drain after an LED upgrade, reinstall the original bulb and verify compatibility. Avoid bulbs advertised as extremely bright if they have poor heat dissipation or exceed the housing’s available space.
Common Problems and Mistakes
A cargo light that does not work may have a burned-out bulb, but the bulb is not always the cause. Check the lamp switch, hatch or liftgate latch switch, door-position sensor, fuse, socket contacts, and wiring in the liftgate hinge area. A misadjusted latch can prevent the vehicle from recognizing that the trunk is open. A dirty or corroded socket can also interrupt power.
Common mistakes include buying a bulb based on a generic online image, confusing a cargo lamp with a rear exterior lamp, forcing the wrong festoon length into a socket, touching a hot incandescent bulb, or leaving the hatch open while diagnosing a battery problem. If a new bulb fails immediately, inspect for a shorted socket, incorrect wattage, damaged wiring, or a control-module fault instead of repeatedly installing replacements.
