What Are Tail Light Bulbs?

Tail light bulbs are also called tail lamp bulbs, rear light bulbs, rear position light bulbs, running light bulbs, or rear parking light bulbs. Search terms such as “tail lamp replacement,” “rear running light bulb,” and “rear position lamp bulb” may describe the same position. In the US, “tail light” usually means the red rear light that comes on with the headlights or parking lights. In the UK and some other markets, the equivalent term is often rear position lamp or rear sidelamp. A tail light is not always the same as a brake light, turn signal, or reverse light, although one housing may contain several of these functions.

The exact bulb size depends on the vehicle’s make, model, year, trim, market, and lighting configuration. There is no single tail light bulb that fits every vehicle.

What the Tail Lights Do

Tail lights make your vehicle visible from behind, especially at night, in tunnels, and during rain, snow, or other low-visibility conditions. They normally emit a steady red light when the headlamps or parking lights are switched on. This helps following drivers see your vehicle’s position, width, and direction of travel.

Many vehicles use a dual-function bulb or LED unit in which the same rear bulb or assembly provides both the dim tail-light function and the brighter brake-light function. Other vehicles use separate bulbs, separate LED circuits, or a full rear lamp assembly. The tail light itself should not be confused with the brighter brake light, amber or red turn signal, white reverse light, or rear fog light.

Where Tail Light Bulbs Are Located

Tail light bulbs are typically installed at the rear corners of the vehicle, inside the left and right tail lamp assemblies. Depending on the design, the assemblies may be mounted in the rear quarter panels, trunk or hatchback lid, liftgate, or tailgate. Some vehicles have one portion of the lamp on the body and another portion on the trunk or liftgate.

Access is commonly provided through the trunk, cargo area, or a removable interior panel. On some vehicles, the entire rear lamp must be removed from the outside. Newer vehicles may use sealed LED assemblies with no replaceable bulb; in that case, the lamp module or complete housing may need replacement.

Common Tail Light Bulb Technologies and Families

Incandescent and halogen-style bulbs

Traditional tail lights use incandescent bulbs with one or two filaments. A single-filament bulb may serve only the tail-light function, while a dual-filament bulb can provide a dim tail light and brighter brake light from the same bulb. Common families found in rear lighting applications include 1156, 1157, 2057, 2357, 3057, 3157, 7440, 7443, and related variants. These numbers are examples, not a universal fitment list. Small wedge bulbs and vehicle-specific socket designs are also common.

Even bulbs with similar-looking bases may have different pin locations, filament ratings, locking tabs, or overall dimensions. A bulb that physically fits the socket may still operate incorrectly or damage the circuit.

LED bulbs and integrated LED lamps

LED replacement bulbs use less electrical power, turn on quickly, and are often available in red or white versions. Many newer vehicles use LEDs built into the tail lamp from the factory rather than a replaceable bulb. Integrated LED units generally require diagnosis of the lamp, wiring, connector, or control module before replacement.

For a replaceable LED upgrade, choose a bulb designed for the correct socket and for tail/brake operation if the original bulb uses two brightness levels. Some LED bulbs are polarity-sensitive and will not illuminate if installed in the wrong orientation. They may also produce less heat than incandescent bulbs, which can affect systems designed to monitor bulb current.

How to Find the Correct Tail Light Bulb Size

  • Check the owner’s manual or the vehicle’s official parts information for the exact bulb number.
  • Use a reputable bulb catalog with the complete make, model, year, trim, body style, and market.
  • Remove the old bulb and compare its printed number, base, filament arrangement, and connector with the replacement.
  • Look for a molded or stamped number on the bulb socket or lamp housing, but treat it as a confirmation rather than the only source.
  • Determine whether the vehicle has separate tail and brake bulbs, a dual-filament bulb, or an integrated LED assembly.

Do not rely only on the appearance of the bulb or a generic online search. Mid-year changes, optional LED packages, export versions, and different body styles can change the correct fitment.

Replacement and Upgrade Considerations

Before replacing the bulb, switch off the lights and allow the lamp to cool. Open the access panel or remove the housing according to the service instructions. Avoid touching the glass of a halogen-style bulb with bare fingers; oil from skin can create hot spots. Inspect the socket for corrosion, looseness, melted plastic, or water intrusion, and check the lamp seal if moisture is present.

Replace bulbs in pairs when practical if both sides use the same incandescent type, because the remaining bulb may be near the end of its service life. Confirm that the replacement produces the correct dim tail-light and bright brake-light levels. A bulb with the wrong filament arrangement can cause the brake light to remain dim, the tail light to stay bright, or another circuit to illuminate unexpectedly.

When upgrading to LEDs, verify that the bulb has the required brightness, light distribution, color, and dual-intensity operation. A white LED behind a red lens may look different from a red LED and may not provide the intended output. Some vehicles detect the lower current draw as a failed bulb, causing a warning message or other electrical behavior. A compatible resistor, load module, or vehicle-specific LED may be required, but resistors create heat and must be mounted safely. Never install a resistor where it can contact wiring, plastic, or upholstery.

Common Tail Light Problems and Mistakes

  • Replacing a brake-light bulb when the failed position is the separate tail-light bulb.
  • Installing a single-filament bulb where a dual-filament bulb is required.
  • Using the wrong base or a similar bulb family that does not lock correctly.
  • Replacing the bulb without repairing a corroded socket, damaged wiring, or water leak.
  • Installing an LED that is too dim, poorly focused, polarity-sensitive, or incompatible with the vehicle’s monitoring system.
  • Failing to test the tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and warning indicators after installation.

After the repair, turn on the parking or head lights and walk behind the vehicle to confirm both tail lights are evenly illuminated. Press the brake pedal and test the turn signals separately. Correct identification and testing are more important than choosing a bulb based on a number alone.
