Rear side marker bulbs are also called rear marker lights, side marker lamps, rear position lights, or side lights. Terminology varies by region: in the United States, “side marker” usually means the small lamp visible from the side of the vehicle, while “position lamp” or “side light” is more common in the United Kingdom and some other markets. A rear side marker is not the same as a tail light, brake light, or rear turn signal, although it may be built into the same lamp assembly.
What Rear Side Marker Lights Do
Rear side markers help other drivers see the vehicle’s length and position from an angle, especially at night, in parking areas, and during poor weather. They normally illuminate whenever the parking lights, headlights, or exterior lighting system is switched on. In the United States, rear side markers commonly emit red light because they are positioned toward the rear. Depending on the vehicle and market, a side marker may glow steadily or may be combined with a turn signal and flash when the vehicle turns.
These lights improve visibility but do not replace the vehicle’s tail lamps, brake lamps, or turn signals. A vehicle can have a separate side marker on the body or bumper, or the marker function can be integrated into the outer edge of the rear tail light housing.
Where the Rear Side Marker Bulb Is Located
A separate rear side marker is typically found near the rear corner of the vehicle, on the side of the quarter panel, rear bumper, cargo-area bodywork, or tail light assembly. It is usually a small lens that can be seen from the side rather than directly behind the vehicle. Some vehicles use a red lens, while others use a clear lens with a red bulb or a red LED module.
Access may be provided from behind the lamp through the trunk, cargo area, wheel well, or a removable interior trim panel. On some vehicles, the complete tail light must be removed before the bulb socket can be reached. Other designs are sealed LED assemblies with no replaceable bulb. A dual-filament bulb may provide both a steady running-light function and a brighter turn-signal function. Other assemblies use a festoon-style bulb, a specialty socket, or a dedicated LED circuit board. The correct bulb depends on the socket, base, voltage, wattage, filament arrangement, lens design, and vehicle wiring.
LED replacement bulbs are available for many socket-based applications. They generally use less power, respond quickly, and can last longer than incandescent bulbs. However, an LED replacement is not automatically compatible with every vehicle. A vehicle may require a resistor, load module, compatible flasher, or coding to prevent rapid turn-signal flashing or a bulb-out warning. Factory LED units may require replacement of the entire lamp assembly rather than a bulb.
How to Find the Correct Rear Side Marker Bulb Size
The most reliable method is to check the vehicle’s owner’s manual, factory service information, or an accurate fitment catalog using the complete make, model, year, trim, market, and lighting configuration. Vehicles produced in the same year can use different bulbs because of package options, body style, regional regulations, or a change from incandescent to LED lighting.
Remove the old bulb only after confirming the access procedure, then compare its markings and physical design with the replacement. Look for the bulb number printed on the glass, metal base, or plastic housing. Also match the base shape, contact arrangement, filament count, dimensions, color, and rated wattage. A bulb that fits physically may still be electrically incorrect or too hot for the lamp housing.
Do not rely only on a generic phrase such as “rear marker bulb” or on a visual similarity. Parts catalogs can list separate bulbs for the rear side marker, tail light, brake light, and turn signal even when they are close together. Verify the exact socket and position before ordering.
Replacement and Upgrade Considerations
Switch the lights off and allow the bulb to cool before servicing it. If the bulb is accessible, avoid touching incandescent glass with bare fingers; oil residue can create hot spots and shorten bulb life. Use a clean cloth or gloves, install the bulb fully into the socket, and confirm that the socket is locked into the housing. Inspect the lens seal and socket for corrosion, water, loose terminals, or heat damage.
After replacement, test the marker with the parking or headlight switch on. Check it from the front, side, and rear angles, and test the turn signal if the marker is part of the signaling circuit. A new bulb that does not illuminate may indicate a blown fuse, corroded ground, damaged wiring, failed socket, or a control-module fault rather than an incorrect bulb.
When upgrading to LED, choose a road-legal bulb with the correct color, beam direction, dimensions, and heat management. Do not install a white LED behind a red lens if the resulting light appears too pale or violates local requirements. Avoid overly bright bulbs that create glare or make the marker look like a brake lamp. If the original lamp is a sealed LED unit, use the specified replacement assembly and do not attempt to modify the housing unless the manufacturer provides a serviceable procedure.
