Search terms may include “front side marker bulb,” “side marker light bulb,” “fender marker bulb,” and “corner marker bulb.”

Terminology varies by region and vehicle design. In the United States, “side marker” usually means a light mounted on the side of the front or rear corner to make the vehicle visible from an angle. In the United Kingdom and some other markets, “side lights” or “position lights” can refer to the front parking or position lamps that face forward, not necessarily the side-facing marker. A turn signal may share the same housing or bulb, but a side marker is not automatically the turn signal.

What the Front Side Marker Light Does

The front side marker helps other drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians see the vehicle’s front corners from the side. It is especially useful at night, in parking areas, and in poor weather. On many vehicles, the marker illuminates whenever the parking lights or headlights are switched on. Some designs flash with the turn signal, while others remain steadily lit and use a separate turn-signal bulb.

Front side markers are commonly amber in the United States, although the lens color, bulb color, and operating behavior depend on the vehicle’s market and lighting configuration. A marker that is not working can reduce side visibility and may cause a safety inspection or equipment violation.

Typical Location

The light is usually positioned at the outer front corner of the vehicle, close to the headlamp or front bumper. LED replacement bulbs can also be sensitive to polarity, socket fit, heat management, and vehicle bulb-out monitoring.

How to Find the Correct Bulb Size

Do not choose a bulb based only on appearance or a generic “side marker” label. Fitment depends on the vehicle’s make, model, year, trim, market, and lighting configuration. The same model may use different bulbs in different production years or with different headlamp packages.

  • Use a reliable vehicle-specific bulb catalog and confirm the exact position, not just “front lights.”

Bulb-family names are not always interchangeable. Two bulbs may look similar but have different base tabs, wattages, pin locations, or physical dimensions. A higher-wattage bulb should not be substituted unless the vehicle manufacturer specifies it, because it can overheat the socket, wiring, or lens.

Replacement Tips and Upgrade Considerations

Turn off the exterior lights and allow hot components to cool before beginning work. If access requires removing a wheel-well liner or trim panel, follow the vehicle service instructions and avoid pulling on wiring. When handling a replaceable halogen or incandescent glass bulb, keep oil from your fingers off the glass; use a clean glove or tissue and avoid touching it directly.

Inspect the socket for corrosion, looseness, melted plastic, or poor contact. Water inside the lens, a damaged seal, or a loose connector can cause a new bulb to fail quickly. Clean light corrosion carefully and replace a damaged socket or seal rather than repeatedly replacing bulbs.

LED upgrades can provide a whiter appearance, lower power consumption, and longer expected service life, but they are not automatically better for every vehicle. Select an LED that matches the original bulb’s base and dimensions, fits fully inside the housing, and is rated for the vehicle’s voltage and temperature conditions. A non-compatible LED may flicker, stay dim, illuminate a bulb-warning message, or fail to work because of polarity. Some vehicles require a compatible load device or electronic solution, but adding resistors can create heat and should be done only with proper installation and insulation.

  • Confusing a forward-facing parking or position lamp with a side-facing marker.
