What Are Parking Light Bulbs?

Parking light bulbs are the small bulbs used for the vehicle’s parking lights, also called position lights, sidelights, city lights, or front marker lights, depending on the vehicle and region. “Sidelights” and “position lamps” are common terms in the UK and other markets, while “parking lights” is more common in the United States. A parking light is not necessarily the same as a side-marker light, daytime running light (DRL), or low-beam headlight, although some vehicles combine more than one function in a single lamp assembly.

The exact bulb size depends on the vehicle’s make, model, year, trim, market, and lighting configuration. There is no universal parking light bulb, so confirm the application before buying a replacement.

What Parking Lights Do

Parking lights provide a low-intensity light that helps make a parked or slowly moving vehicle visible to other drivers. When switched on, they commonly illuminate the front corners of the vehicle and may also activate the rear tail lights, license plate light, and dashboard lighting. Their purpose is visibility and signaling the vehicle’s presence, not illuminating the road ahead.

On some vehicles, parking lights can be used by themselves when the vehicle is parked on a dark roadside. On others, the first position on the headlight switch turns on the parking or position lamps before the second position activates the low-beam headlights. Some modern vehicles also use these lamps as part of the front lighting signature or as a separate city-light function.

Where Parking Light Bulbs Are Located

Front parking light bulbs are typically installed inside the headlight housing, near the outside corner of the low-beam or high-beam reflector. They may sit in a small twist-lock socket accessed from the rear of the headlight assembly. On some vehicles, the bulb is mounted in a separate corner lamp or front turn-signal housing.

Depending on the design, the parking light may appear white, amber, or another legally approved color. A front parking light can be separate from the side-marker lamp, or both functions may share one bulb or LED module. Rear parking lights are generally part of the tail-light system rather than a separate “parking light bulb.” Always identify the actual socket and lighting function before removing parts.

Common Parking Light Bulb Technologies

Halogen and Incandescent Bulbs

Many older vehicles use small incandescent or halogen bulbs with a wedge base. Common examples include bulb families such as 194, 168, 2825, and W5W, but these numbers are only examples and are not interchangeable for every vehicle. Other applications use miniature bayonet-base bulbs, including some 1156- or 1157-family designs. The correct base, wattage, dimensions, and filament arrangement must match the original specification.

LED Bulbs

Newer vehicles frequently use factory LED parking lights. A factory LED may be a replaceable bulb, a sealed module, or an integral part of the headlight assembly. Aftermarket LED replacements are available for some socket-based systems and can provide lower power consumption, a whiter appearance, and longer service life.

LED conversion bulbs are not automatically compatible. Some vehicles monitor bulb current and may display a bulb-out warning or cause rapid flashing when a lower-current LED is installed. A compatible, properly designed load solution may be required, but adding resistors can create substantial heat and should not be installed where they can damage wiring or plastic components.

How to Find the Correct Parking Light Bulb Size

  • Check the owner’s manual: Look for parking lamp, position lamp, city light, front marker, or sidelight information.
  • Use a vehicle-specific bulb finder: Enter the exact make, model, year, trim, and market. Equipment packages can change the lighting system.
  • Read the old bulb: The bulb number may be printed on the glass or metal base. Treat it as a useful clue, then compare its base and specifications with the vehicle listing.
  • Inspect the socket: Match the base style, contact arrangement, overall length, and bulb diameter. Do not force a similar-looking bulb into the socket.
  • Check the lamp assembly: If no replaceable bulb is present, the vehicle may use an LED board or sealed lamp that requires a module or assembly replacement.

Listings can be inaccurate, especially for vehicles sold in multiple countries. Verify polarity requirements for LED bulbs, color requirements, wattage, and whether the bulb is for the front parking function rather than the turn signal, DRL, or side marker.

Replacement and Upgrade Considerations

Turn the lighting switch off and allow the lamp to cool before replacement. Access may require removing a cover, air intake duct, or other nearby component. Avoid touching halogen glass with bare fingers because skin oils can create hot spots and shorten bulb life. Install the bulb fully into the socket, secure the socket in the housing, and test both the parking and headlight switch positions.

Replace parking bulbs in pairs when matching appearance is important, especially with incandescent bulbs. A new bulb can look noticeably brighter or whiter than an older bulb on the opposite side. When upgrading to LED, select a bulb with the correct physical size, light distribution, color, and weather resistance. An overly bright or sharply colored bulb may create glare or violate local lighting regulations.

Common Problems and Mistakes

A parking light that does not work may be caused by a burned-out bulb, corroded socket, loose connector, blown fuse, damaged wiring, or a failed body-control module. If both sides stop working at once, check the fuse and switch circuit before replacing bulbs. If only one side fails, inspect the bulb and socket first.

Do not assume that a parking light is a DRL or a turn signal just because it uses the same housing. Do not replace a dual-function bulb with a single-function version, and do not use a higher-wattage bulb to make the light brighter. The safest replacement is the vehicle-approved bulb or module that matches the original fitment and electrical specification.
