What Are Map Light Bulbs?

Map light bulbs are the small interior bulbs used for focused reading or locating items inside a vehicle. They are also called map lights, map lamps, reading lights, interior reading lights, or overhead console lights. Search terms such as “map light bulb,” “map lamp replacement,” and “front reading light bulb” can describe the same position. In some vehicles, the map light is combined with the dome light or courtesy light, but these terms are not always interchangeable: a map light is usually directional, while a dome light provides broader cabin illumination. In the UK, “interior light,” “reading lamp,” or “courtesy light” may be used more often than “map light.”

The correct replacement depends on the vehicle’s make, model, year, trim, market, and lighting configuration. There is no single map light bulb size that fits every vehicle.

What Map Lights Do

Map lights provide a small, targeted beam for reading a map, checking a phone, finding an item, or seeing controls without turning on the full interior light. Most are operated by an individual push button, rocker switch, touch-sensitive control, or a door and interior-light switch shared with other cabin lamps.

Many vehicles have separate left and right map lights so the driver and front passenger can use them independently. Some overhead consoles also include a center dome light, microphone, sunglasses compartment, garage-door controls, or ambient lighting. Rear-seat reading lights may use similar bulbs, but they should be checked separately because their housings and electrical specifications can differ.

Typical Location

Front map lights are commonly mounted in the overhead console near the rearview mirror, at the front edge of the headliner, or in the roof-mounted interior lamp assembly. They may be positioned beside the dome light or built into the rearview mirror housing. Rear map or reading lights can be located above the rear doors, in the headliner, on the backs of the front seats, or in rear side panels.

The lens may be a clear or frosted plastic cover with one or more small openings. Some lenses pull straight down, while others are retained by clips or small screws. Inspect the housing before ordering a bulb, because a similar-looking lamp elsewhere in the cabin may use a different design.

Common Map Light Bulb Types

Map lights use several bulb technologies and physical families. Common incandescent or halogen-style replacements include:

  • Wedge-base bulbs: Small wedge lamps are often listed under families such as 194, 168, 2825, or T10. These numbers are common examples, not a universal fitment.
  • Festoon bulbs: Tube-shaped bulbs with electrical contacts at both ends may be identified by their overall length, such as approximately 31 mm, 36 mm, 39 mm, or 41 mm. The exact length and terminal style matter.
  • Bayonet-base bulbs: Some assemblies use a miniature bayonet bulb, including families sometimes identified as BA9s or related variants.
  • Integrated LED assemblies: Newer vehicles may use a circuit board or sealed LED module instead of a replaceable bulb. In that case, the complete lamp assembly or a vehicle-specific module may be required.

LED replacement bulbs are widely available for wedge, festoon, and some bayonet sockets. They can use less power, produce a whiter appearance, and last longer than incandescent bulbs. However, the bulb must match the socket, dimensions, polarity requirements, heat management, and available clearance.

How to Find the Correct Map Light Size

The most reliable method is to use the vehicle’s owner’s manual, factory parts catalog, or a reputable fitment lookup using the full vehicle information. Enter the make, model, year, trim, body style, and market when available. A factory service manual or parts diagram can help distinguish the front map lamp from the dome lamp and rear reading lamps.

If you remove the old bulb, compare its markings and physical design. Look for a printed bulb number, voltage, wattage, or manufacturer code. For a festoon bulb, measure the total length between the outside ends and confirm the contact shape. For a wedge bulb, compare the base width, glass or LED body size, and overall height. Also check whether the original bulb is a single-filament incandescent lamp or a special LED module.

Do not rely only on a listing that says “fits most cars,” a bulb number from a different interior position, or the appearance of the bulb. Two lamps can look nearly identical while using different lengths, bases, wattages, or electrical connections.

Replacement and Upgrade Considerations

Turn the light off and allow an incandescent bulb to cool before working. If practical, switch off the interior-light circuit or disconnect the negative battery cable, especially when working around a metal tool and exposed contacts. Use a plastic trim tool or a wrapped small screwdriver to release the lens without cracking the headliner or marring the console.

Install the replacement without touching a halogen capsule or hot bulb with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten its life. Make sure the bulb is fully seated and that the lens is securely clipped back into place. Test each map-light switch, the door-operated function, and any dimming or fade-out feature after installation.

When upgrading to LED, choose a color temperature and brightness suitable for interior use. Extremely bright or blue-tinted LEDs can create glare, reduce nighttime visibility, or distract the driver. Some LED bulbs are polarity-sensitive and will need to be removed and turned around if they do not illuminate. A vehicle may also require a CAN bus-compatible or load-compatible design, although many low-current interior-light circuits do not need an error-free adapter.

Common Problems and Mistakes

  • Wrong position: The dome, vanity mirror, trunk, glove-box, and map lights may use different bulb families.
  • Wrong festoon length: A bulb that is too long may not fit, while a shorter one may not contact both terminals reliably.
  • Loose socket contacts: Bent or oxidized contacts can cause flickering even with a correct bulb.
  • LED polarity: A non-illuminating LED may simply need to be reversed.
  • Blown fuse or door-switch fault: If several interior lights fail together, the problem may not be the bulb.
  • Overheating: An oversized or excessively powerful bulb can discolor the lens or damage the housing.

If a new bulb still does not work, check the fuse, socket power, ground, switch operation, and any delayed interior-light control module. Follow the vehicle’s service information before replacing an integrated LED assembly.
