License Plate Light Bulbs: Names and Purpose

License plate light bulbs are also called license plate lamps, number plate lights, tag lights, registration plate lights, or rear plate lights. “License plate” is the usual US term, while “number plate” and “registration plate” are more common in the UK and some other markets. These terms describe the same general lighting position, although a vehicle may use one or more separate bulbs or an integrated LED module.

The license plate light illuminates the vehicle’s rear license plate after dark so it can be read by law enforcement, parking systems, and other road users. It is not a brake light, tail light, reverse light, or rear fog light. On many vehicles, the license plate lamps turn on with the headlights or parking lights. Some vehicles use a dedicated body-control system that monitors or controls the lamps independently.

Where the License Plate Light Is Located

License plate lights are typically mounted directly above the rear plate, but their exact location depends on the vehicle design. Common locations include the trunk lid, liftgate, hatch, tailgate, rear bumper, or a trim panel surrounding the plate recess. A vehicle may have two lamps, one on each side of the plate, or a single lamp centered above it.

Look for small clear or lightly tinted lenses aimed downward at the plate. The lamp housing may be exposed, recessed into the trim, or hidden behind a removable panel. On some newer vehicles, the lamp is part of a sealed LED assembly rather than a separate replaceable bulb socket. Do not assume that every small lamp near the rear plate is a license plate light; nearby cargo, trunk, reflector, or courtesy lamps can look similar.

Older and lower-cost vehicles commonly use miniature incandescent bulbs. These bulbs have a wire filament and produce a warm white or slightly yellow light. Common bulb families may include wedge-base types such as 168, 194, 2825, and related automotive equivalents. Some applications use festoon bulbs, often in lengths associated with 31 mm, 36 mm, 39 mm, or 42 mm designs. Bayonet-base and other miniature bulb families are also used in some vehicles.

These examples are only common families, not universal fitments. A number such as 194 may describe a bulb family or electrical specification, but the correct replacement still depends on the socket, dimensions, voltage, wattage, and vehicle application.

LED license plate bulbs are increasingly common. Some vehicles use a replaceable LED bulb in a conventional socket, while others use a complete LED lamp assembly with permanently mounted diodes. LEDs generally use less power, last longer, and produce a brighter, whiter appearance than incandescent bulbs. Their performance depends on the LED design, lens, beam direction, and housing—not just the advertised lumen number.

How to Find the Correct Bulb Size

The most reliable way to identify the correct license plate bulb is to check the vehicle’s owner’s manual or an official parts catalog using the complete make, model, year, trim, market, and lighting configuration. Fitment can vary between body styles and production dates, and the same vehicle name may use different lamps in different countries or trim levels.

  • Check the existing bulb: Remove it carefully and read the marking printed on the glass or metal base. Compare the base shape, contact arrangement, voltage, wattage, and overall dimensions.
  • Inspect the socket: Determine whether it is a wedge, festoon, bayonet, or another style. For festoon bulbs, measure the length between the contact points; a bulb that is too long may not fit or may damage the socket.
  • Use a reputable fitment lookup: Enter the exact vehicle information and verify the result against the original bulb and socket. Do not rely on a generic “license plate bulb” label alone.
  • Check whether it is an assembly: If the lamp contains an integrated circuit board or sealed LED unit, replacing a loose bulb may not be possible. The replacement may need to be a complete lamp housing.

Disconnecting the battery is not normally required for a simple bulb change, but switch the exterior lights off and allow hot incandescent bulbs to cool. Follow the vehicle’s access procedure because some lenses are held by screws while others release through a trim panel or spring clips.

Replacement and LED Upgrade Considerations

Use the specified voltage and wattage for an incandescent replacement. A higher-wattage bulb can overheat the socket, lens, or wiring, while an underpowered bulb may be too dim. Avoid touching an incandescent glass bulb with oily fingers; residue can create hot spots and shorten its life.

When upgrading to LED, choose the correct base and physical size first. Check polarity because some plug-in LED bulbs work only when installed in one direction. If the bulb does not illuminate, remove it, rotate it, and test again. Vehicles that monitor lamp current may show a bulb-out warning, flicker, or rapid cycling after an LED conversion. A properly designed, vehicle-compatible LED or an appropriate load solution may be needed, but adding resistors can create substantial heat and should not be installed where they can contact plastic, wiring, or trim.

Select a white, evenly distributed light that illuminates the plate without excessive glare. Very high-output or blue-tinted bulbs can create poor readability, attract unwanted attention, or fail local lighting requirements. Make sure the bulb or assembly is suitable for exterior use and that the lens, gasket, and retaining screws are correctly installed to keep out water.

Common Problems and Mistakes

  • Replacing the wrong lamp: A trunk or cargo bulb may share a similar size but have a different base, wattage, or beam pattern.
  • Installing the wrong dimensions: A bulb can have the correct electrical marking but still be too long, too wide, or incorrectly shaped for the housing.
  • Ignoring corrosion: Water intrusion or corrosion at the socket can cause flickering, dim output, or repeated bulb failure. Clean only with suitable electrical-contact products and repair damaged seals or terminals.
  • Leaving the lens dirty: Road film and oxidation can block much of the light even when the bulb is working.
  • Replacing only one matching lamp: If two identical incandescent bulbs are installed and one has failed, replacing both can provide more even brightness and color.

After installation, turn on the parking or headlights and confirm that the entire plate is evenly illuminated. Verify that the lamp remains secure, the lens is sealed, and no warning message or flicker appears. Always confirm the final bulb or assembly against the vehicle’s exact fitment rather than assuming that a common bulb code fits every license plate light.
