High and Low Beam Bulbs: What They Do
High beam bulbs are also called high beams, brights, main beam, full beam, or driving lights, depending on the region and context. Low beam bulbs may be called low beams, dipped beams, dipped headlights, or passing lights. In the US, “high beam” and “low beam” are the usual terms. In the UK and some other markets, “main beam” generally means high beam, while “dipped beam” means low beam. “Driving light” can also describe a separate auxiliary lamp, so do not assume it means the factory high beam.
These bulbs provide the vehicle’s forward illumination at night. Low beams create a controlled light pattern for normal nighttime driving, helping you see the road without shining directly into the eyes of oncoming drivers. High beams project farther and higher for dark roads with little or no traffic. They should be switched off when approaching another vehicle or when following a vehicle closely.
Where High and Low Beam Bulbs Are Located
High and low beam bulbs are normally installed inside the front headlight assemblies, one assembly on each side of the vehicle. The assemblies are mounted at the front corners of the vehicle, usually in the fenders or grille area. Depending on the design, one headlight housing may contain separate high- and low-beam bulbs, or a single dual-function bulb may provide both beam functions.
Some vehicles use separate reflectors or projector modules for high and low beams. Others use a bi-function projector, a shutter inside a projector, or electronically controlled LED modules. Daytime running lights, fog lights, turn signals, and parking lights may be located in the same overall headlamp assembly but are separate lighting positions and can use different parts.
Common Bulb Technologies and Families
Halogen
Halogen remains common in older and entry-level vehicles. A halogen bulb uses a replaceable filament capsule and is often identified by a standardized bulb family number. Some families are designed for low beam, high beam, or both functions, but the correct family depends on the vehicle. Halogen bulbs are generally straightforward to replace, although access can be limited behind the headlamp.
High-intensity discharge
HID, also called xenon, uses an arc rather than a filament. HID systems require a ballast and high-voltage ignition equipment. The replaceable part may be an HID capsule, but the ballast, igniter, or complete headlamp module can also be involved. HID systems can retain dangerous high voltage after the lights are switched off, so follow the manufacturer’s safety procedure and avoid touching wiring or connectors unnecessarily.
LED
LED headlights may use replaceable LED bulbs, but many factory LED systems use sealed LED modules or an entire headlamp assembly. An aftermarket LED replacement designed to fit a halogen socket does not automatically produce the correct beam pattern. LED bulb heat sinks, cooling fans, drivers, and electrical compatibility also need adequate space and airflow.
Common bulb families include single-function and dual-function designs, but the code printed on a bulb is not enough by itself. Similar-looking bulbs can have different bases, wattages, connectors, beam positions, or indexing tabs. Never select a bulb solely because it appears to fit.
How to Find the Correct Bulb Size
Actual fitment depends on the vehicle’s make, model, year, trim, market, and lighting configuration. The most reliable approach is to check several sources:
- Owner’s manual: Look for the exterior bulb chart or headlamp specification. It may list high beam and low beam separately.
- Existing bulb: Remove the bulb only after the lamp is cool and the vehicle is safely switched off. Read the family number and voltage or wattage markings on the base. A previous replacement may be incorrect, so confirm the number with another source.
- Parts catalog: Use a reputable catalog that allows exact vehicle selection, including trim and headlight type. Factory halogen, HID, and LED options can change fitment within the same model year.
- Headlamp or socket markings: Some housings, caps, and sockets have identifying labels, but these markings should be treated as supporting information rather than the only authority.
When ordering, specify whether you need the high beam, low beam, or a combined high/low beam position. Compare the base, connector, locking tabs, filament or emitter location, and rated voltage and wattage. If the vehicle uses a complete LED or HID module, a conventional bulb may not be the correct replacement.
Replacement Considerations
Replace bulbs in pairs when practical. A new bulb can be noticeably brighter or a different color than an older bulb on the opposite side. Use the original specified wattage unless the vehicle manufacturer provides an approved alternative. Higher-wattage bulbs can overheat sockets, wiring, or reflectors and may damage the headlamp.
Before working, turn off the lights, allow the housing to cool, and keep the glass of a halogen bulb free of fingerprints. Oil from skin can create hot spots and shorten bulb life, so handle the glass with a clean glove or cloth. Make sure the bulb is fully seated and the retaining clip or locking ring is secured. A poorly seated bulb can aim light incorrectly even when it turns on.
Upgrades and Common Mistakes
Performance halogen bulbs may offer a brighter or whiter appearance, but they can have a shorter service life. LED conversion bulbs may improve appearance or output in some housings, but compatibility, legality, heat management, radio interference, warning lights, and beam alignment must be checked. HID or LED conversions in a housing not designed for them can create glare and a poor beam pattern. In some areas, these conversions may not be street legal.
Common problems include installing the high-beam bulb in the low-beam position, buying a bulb for a different trim, forcing an incompatible connector, touching a halogen capsule, and assuming both sides use the same replaceable bulb when one side has a failed module. After replacement, test both beam settings, inspect the beam pattern, and have the headlights aimed if the housing was disturbed or the light pattern appears uneven.
