Rear fog light bulbs are also called rear fog lamps, rear fog lights, rear fogs, or rear foglight bulbs. In UK and European usage, “rear fog lamp” is the usual term; in the US, drivers may search for “rear fog light bulb” or “back fog light.” A rear fog light is different from a regular tail light, brake light, or front fog light. It produces a bright red signal at the back of the vehicle so other drivers can see your vehicle in very poor visibility, such as dense fog, heavy snow, or severe rain.
Rear fog lights are not intended to be used as extra tail lights during normal nighttime driving. Their high brightness can distract or temporarily obscure following drivers when visibility is clear.
What Is a Rear Fog Light Used For?
A rear fog light helps make your vehicle more visible from behind when ordinary tail lamps are difficult to see. It is typically brighter than a tail light and may be similar in intensity to a brake light, although the exact design depends on the vehicle and local regulations. Many vehicles have one rear fog light, while others have two.
The rear fog switch is often separate from the headlight, parking-light, and front-fog controls. Depending on the vehicle, the instrument panel may show a yellow or amber rear-fog indicator. How to Find the Correct Rear Fog Bulb Size

- Inspect the existing bulb after removing it safely. Read the printed code and compare the base, contacts, filament arrangement, voltage, and wattage.
- Confirm whether the vehicle has a replaceable bulb or an integrated LED assembly.
- Compare the replacement with the old bulb and the lamp socket before installation. Do not force a bulb that does not lock into place correctly.
Fitment can vary between production years, body styles, export markets, trims, and optional lighting packages. Even vehicles that share a platform may use different rear lamp assemblies. Online listings that show several possible bulb numbers should be treated as a reason to verify the vehicle and existing part, not as permission to choose any listed bulb.
Replacement Considerations
Turn off the exterior lights and ignition before replacing a rear fog bulb. Allow the lamp to cool, especially if it uses an incandescent bulb. Access may be through the trunk, cargo area, rear wheel opening, or a removable panel. Follow the service instructions because forcing a trim panel or twisting the wrong socket can damage the lamp housing.
Use the specified voltage and wattage. A higher-wattage bulb may create excessive heat, damage the socket, discolor the lens, or overload the wiring. A lower-wattage bulb may be too dim and may trigger a bulb warning. Handle a glass halogen bulb with clean gloves or a lint-free cloth; fingerprints can create hot spots. Make sure the bulb and socket are fully seated, and check the lamp for water or condensation before closing it.
After installation, test the rear fog light with the headlights or required control setting turned on. Confirm that the indicator works, the light is bright and red, and no other rear function has been lost. If the replacement does not illuminate, check the fuse, socket contacts, ground, wiring, and switch circuit. A failed LED module may require lamp-assembly replacement or professional diagnosis rather than a bulb.
LED Upgrades and Common Mistakes
LED replacements can offer faster illumination, lower power consumption, and longer service life, but they are not automatically a safe direct replacement. Confirm that the LED has the correct base, polarity compatibility, light output, beam pattern, and heat management. An LED that physically fits may still scatter light incorrectly or be too dim through the lens.
Some vehicles monitor lamp resistance and may display a bulb-out warning after an LED conversion. A resistor or decoder may be needed, but resistors produce heat and must be installed safely away from plastic and wiring. Do not use an LED conversion that disables required monitoring or creates excessive glare.
Common mistakes include installing a tail-light bulb in the rear fog socket, using the rear fog light in clear weather, replacing a one-sided lamp with an unauthorized second lamp, and assuming the reverse light or rear reflector is the fog-light position. If the bulb code, lamp behavior, or wiring is unclear, verify the vehicle-specific service information before buying a replacement.
