Daytime Running Light Bulbs: What They Do
Daytime running lights are commonly called DRLs, daytime running lamps, daytime driving lights, or simply running lights. “Daylight running lights” is sometimes used in casual searches, but “daytime running lights” is the standard term. In the US and Canada, DRL usually means a light that turns on automatically while the vehicle is being driven during daylight. In the UK and other markets, daytime running lights has the same basic meaning; do not confuse DRLs with “sidelights” or parking lights, which are separate position lamps used to mark a parked or moving vehicle.
DRLs improve a vehicle’s visibility to other road users during the day. They are not intended to illuminate the road like low beams, and they do not replace headlights in darkness, rain, fog, tunnels, or other low-visibility conditions. Depending on the vehicle, the DRL may use a dedicated lamp, part of the headlamp assembly, a reduced-intensity high-beam bulb, or a separate LED light strip.
Where the DRL Is Located
A daytime running light is normally mounted at the front of the vehicle, one on each side. It may be located inside the headlight housing, below or beside the main headlamp, in the front bumper, or in a dedicated lamp near the grille. On some vehicles, the DRL is integrated into the turn-signal or fog-lamp assembly, although its wiring and operating function remain separate.
The exact appearance varies widely. A DRL can be a small replaceable bulb, a long LED bar, a circular lamp, or a bright section of a larger headlight assembly. Some vehicles use the low-beam or high-beam reflector at reduced power instead of a separate visible lamp. Check the owner’s manual or the vehicle’s lighting diagram before removing parts, because the lamp that appears to be the DRL may not have a separately replaceable bulb.
Common DRL Bulb Types and Technologies
DRLs use several lighting technologies. Older systems commonly use halogen or incandescent bulbs. These may be standard single-filament or dual-filament designs, with the vehicle’s control module supplying reduced voltage or using a separate circuit for daytime operation. Bulb families often seen in DRL applications include 1156, 1157, 3156, 3157, 7440, 7443, and some H-series halogen bulbs, but these examples are not interchangeable by default.
Many newer vehicles use factory LED DRLs. The LED may be a replaceable bulb in a socket, or it may be permanently built into the lamp assembly. Integrated LED units generally require replacement of the entire lamp, headlight, or LED module if the light fails. Some vehicles also use a high-intensity discharge or other specialized lighting system, although this is less common for a simple dedicated DRL.
Bulb families can differ in base design, pin arrangement, filament position, electrical load, brightness, and physical dimensions. Even bulbs with similar numbers may not perform correctly in the same socket. Never choose a bulb based only on appearance or wattage.
How to Find the Correct DRL Bulb Size
The most reliable method is to search by the vehicle’s complete information: make, model, year, trim, engine where relevant, market, and lighting package. Use the owner’s manual, the manufacturer’s parts catalog, or a reputable automotive parts catalog. Search terms such as “[year] [make] [model] DRL bulb,” “daytime running light replacement,” or “daytime running lamp bulb size” can help, but confirm the result against the vehicle.
Fitment may change between trims, production dates, markets, and headlight configurations. A vehicle may use a replaceable bulb in one version and an integrated LED assembly in another. If you remove the old bulb, compare its part number, base, connector, filament arrangement, and overall dimensions with the replacement. Do not assume that the low-beam, high-beam, turn-signal, or fog-light bulb is also the DRL bulb.
Replacement and Upgrade Considerations
Turn the vehicle off and allow the lamp to cool before servicing it. Follow the manual’s access instructions; some DRL bulbs are reached through the engine compartment, while others require removing a wheel-well liner or other panel. Avoid touching halogen glass with bare fingers, because skin oils can create hot spots and shorten bulb life. Make sure the bulb is fully seated and the connector is locked before testing it.
When replacing a halogen or incandescent DRL, use the specified voltage and wattage. A higher-wattage bulb can overheat the socket, wiring, or reflector. An overly tinted or low-output bulb may reduce conspicuity even if it physically fits. For LED upgrades, select a product designed for DRL use rather than a generic LED. The vehicle may monitor bulb current and report a failure, flicker, pulse, or shut the LED off if its electrical load is too low. A compatible CAN-bus-rated LED or a properly engineered load solution may be required, but external resistors can become extremely hot and must be installed safely.
LED polarity, heat management, beam placement, and dimming behavior also matter. A bulb that is bright when viewed straight on may produce poor visibility from the side or create glare if its emitters do not match the original filament position. Do not modify wiring to defeat the factory DRL safety logic, and confirm that any upgrade complies with local lighting regulations.
Common DRL Problems and Mistakes
- Wrong bulb location: The failed lamp may be a turn signal, parking lamp, or low beam rather than the DRL.
- Wrong bulb family: Similar-looking sockets can use different bases, pins, or filament arrangements.
- Both DRLs are off: Check the DRL setting, ignition or parking-brake conditions, fuse, relay, and control module before replacing bulbs.
- LED flickering or warnings: The replacement may not be electrically compatible with the vehicle’s monitoring system.
- Only one side is dim: Inspect the socket, ground, connector, corrosion, and voltage—not just the bulb.
- No separate replacement bulb: The vehicle may use an integrated LED module or complete lamp assembly.
Because actual fitment depends on make, model, year, trim, market, and lighting configuration, verify the exact DRL design and bulb number before ordering.
