In some markets, “turning light” can instead refer to the turn signal, so confirm which function your vehicle uses.

A cornering light helps the driver see into a turn, around a driveway, at an intersection, or along the side of the road. It usually activates when the turn signal is switched on, when the steering wheel is turned, or when the vehicle’s adaptive lighting system detects a bend. Some vehicles use a separate fixed lamp, while others swivel the headlamp projector or redirect part of the headlight beam. The term “cornering light bulb” therefore does not always describe a replaceable bulb; some systems use an integrated LED module or a motorized headlamp assembly.

Where Cornering Lights Are Located

Dedicated cornering lamps are typically mounted at the front corners of the vehicle, inside or beside the headlamp assembly. Depending on the design, the lamp may point forward and outward, sit behind a clear section of the headlight lens, or be positioned in the lower bumper or fog-light area. High-intensity discharge systems

HID or xenon technology is less common for a separate cornering lamp, but a vehicle with adaptive or swivel headlights may use HID components in the main headlamp system. HID systems operate at high voltage and are not a suitable do-it-yourself bulb upgrade unless the replacement is specifically designed for that system. A cornering-light fault on an adaptive HID assembly may involve a ballast, control module, actuator, wiring, or sensor instead of the light source.

How to Find the Correct Cornering Light Bulb Size

The safest method is to check the vehicle’s owner’s manual, factory parts catalog, or a reputable vehicle-specific bulb lookup. Fitment depends on the make, model, year, trim, market, and lighting configuration. The same model can use different cornering light equipment depending on its headlamp package, body style, or optional adaptive-lighting system.

  • Look up the cornering or static cornering lamp separately from the turn signal, parking lamp, fog lamp, and headlight.
  • Use the original bulb’s printed code only as a starting point, then verify voltage, wattage, base style, dimensions, and connector.
  • Inspect the old bulb and socket after removing it, but do not assume a similar-looking bulb is electrically compatible.
  • Check whether the vehicle uses a replaceable bulb or a sealed LED, HID, projector, or adaptive headlamp module.
  • Compare left- and right-side equipment if one side still works, since some vehicles use the same part on both sides while others do not.

Online catalogs can list several bulbs for a single vehicle because the catalog may combine multiple headlamp options. When possible, confirm the part number through the vehicle identification number, factory service information, or the lamp assembly label.

Replacement and Upgrade Considerations

Replace a failed cornering bulb with the correct type, voltage, and wattage. A higher-wattage bulb can overheat the socket, wiring, reflector, or lens and may create excessive electrical load. For halogen bulbs, avoid touching the glass with bare fingers; oil residue can create hot spots and shorten bulb life. Use gloves or a clean towel, and make sure the bulb is fully seated before reinstalling the connector and cover.

LED replacement bulbs can provide longer service life and lower power consumption, but they are not automatically compatible. Possible problems include dashboard bulb warnings, flickering, radio interference, incorrect beam direction, poor heat management, and a bulb that does not fit behind the factory dust cover. A resistor or decoder may sometimes address a monitoring warning, but it does not correct an incorrect optical pattern or unsafe heat buildup. Do not disable a vehicle’s lighting monitor without understanding the consequences.

After replacement, test the cornering light with the engine running and the headlights, turn signal, and steering inputs required by the vehicle. Some systems operate only below a certain speed or only with low beams on. Check both sides, confirm that the lamp illuminates the intended side area, and verify that no warning message remains.

Common Problems and Mistakes

A cornering light that does not activate may have a failed bulb, corroded socket, damaged wiring, blown fuse, bad turn-signal input, steering-angle sensor fault, body control module problem, or adaptive-lighting error. Replacing the bulb will not fix a control-system fault. Moisture inside the housing, a loose connector, and an incorrectly installed bulb are also common causes of failure.

Do not confuse a cornering lamp with a fog light or turn signal when ordering parts. Do not rely on a generic bulb chart, and do not install a brighter bulb simply because the cornering light seems weak. If the vehicle uses an integrated LED or adaptive headlamp, follow the manufacturer’s repair procedure and use qualified service when high-voltage, calibration, or headlamp aiming work is involved.
