Center Stop Light Bulbs: Names and Purpose

Center stop light bulbs are used in the vehicle’s center brake light, commonly called the third brake light, center brake light, or center high-mounted stop lamp (CHMSL). Other search terms include high-mounted brake light, high-level brake light, and third stop lamp. In US usage, “third brake light” and “center high-mounted stop lamp” are common. In the UK and some other markets, “high-level stop lamp” is more typical. These terms generally describe the same lighting position, although a vehicle may use an LED assembly instead of a replaceable bulb.

The center stop light illuminates when you press the brake pedal. Its elevated, central position gives following drivers an additional warning that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. Because it is separate from the left and right brake lights, it remains visible through traffic and can help reduce the chance of a rear-end collision. It is a required safety light on many vehicles, so a failed center stop light should be repaired promptly.

Where the Center Stop Light Is Located

The center stop light is usually mounted high on the rear of the vehicle, above the left and right tail lamps. On sedans and coupes, it may be installed in the rear window shelf, rear package tray, trunk lid, or the upper edge of the rear window. On hatchbacks, wagons, and SUVs, it is often built into the liftgate, spoiler, roof spoiler, or upper rear trim.

Pickup trucks may have the lamp in the cab’s rear window area or in a high-mounted housing above the bed. Vans and larger vehicles can use a long lamp mounted high on the rear doors or body. The exact location depends on the body style, market, trim level, and original lighting design. A center stop light may look like one continuous bar even when it contains several separate bulbs or LED segments.

Common Bulb Technologies and Families

Older center stop lights commonly use replaceable incandescent miniature bulbs. These may be small wedge-base bulbs, specialty miniature bulbs, or, less often, a festoon-style bulb. Some vehicles use a larger single-filament automotive bulb in the center lamp, but there is no universal bulb size for this position.

Common bulb families found in some center stop light applications include miniature wedge types such as the 194/168 family and larger wedge types such as 912/921-style bulbs. Some housings use other wedge, bayonet, or festoon formats. These examples are not a fitment recommendation: the correct bulb can differ even between two versions of the same model.

Many newer vehicles use LEDs. The center stop light may contain replaceable LED bulbs, a removable LED board, or a sealed lamp assembly with LEDs permanently integrated into the housing. If the LEDs are built into the assembly, replacing a bulb is not possible; the complete center stop lamp, circuit board, or housing may need to be replaced. Factory LED systems can also use a dedicated connector or control circuit rather than a standard socket.

How to Find the Correct Replacement

Use the vehicle’s exact make, model, year, trim, body style, and market when checking fitment. Lighting equipment can vary with factory options, production changes, cargo or spoiler packages, and regional specifications. A vehicle may have an incandescent center stop light in one trim and an integrated LED assembly in another.

  • Check the owner’s manual for the center stop light or high-mounted stop lamp bulb specification.
  • Remove the old bulb and read the markings on its metal base or glass envelope, if the design has a replaceable bulb.
  • Inspect the socket and connector before ordering. Base shape, terminal arrangement, bulb length, and wattage must match.
  • Use a trusted parts catalog or manufacturer fitment guide, and confirm the replacement against the vehicle’s VIN when possible.
  • If no removable bulb is present, search for the complete center high-mounted stop lamp or third brake light assembly rather than a generic bulb.

Do not identify the bulb only by appearance. Two bulbs can look similar while using different bases, electrical ratings, or physical dimensions. An online listing that says a bulb is “for third brake lights” is not proof that it fits every vehicle.

Replacement and Upgrade Considerations

Before removing the lamp, switch off the ignition and lights. Follow the service instructions because access may require removing a trim panel, rear shelf cover, spoiler cover, or liftgate trim. Use care around plastic clips and weather seals. If the lamp is mounted near the rear glass, avoid putting pressure on the glass or its surrounding trim.

Replace an incandescent bulb with the same type, voltage, and wattage unless the vehicle manufacturer specifies an approved alternative. Installing a higher-wattage bulb can create excess heat, damage the socket, melt the housing, or cause wiring problems. A lower-wattage bulb may be too dim or may trigger a warning on vehicles that monitor lamp circuits.

LED upgrades can provide faster illumination, lower power use, and a longer service life. However, the LED must have the correct base, polarity compatibility, brightness, heat management, and physical clearance. Some vehicles may report a bulb-out warning, flicker, glow faintly when switched off, or flash incorrectly after an LED conversion. A compatible resistor, load module, decoder, or vehicle-specific LED may be required, but resistors produce heat and should be installed safely. Never defeat a bulb-monitoring or safety system without understanding the consequences.

Common Problems and Mistakes

If the center stop light does not work, first check whether the failure affects only the center lamp or all brake lights. A single failed bulb or LED section may indicate a local problem. If all brake lights are out, inspect the brake light fuse, brake pedal switch, wiring, and ground. Corroded sockets, loose connectors, water intrusion, damaged liftgate wiring, and cracked solder joints are also common causes.

Test the lamp with the brake pedal pressed while the vehicle is safely parked. Do not rely on the tail-light function because the center stop lamp normally operates only with the brake circuit. After replacement, verify that the light is bright, evenly illuminated, securely mounted, and visible from behind. Confirm that the brake lights turn off completely when the pedal is released.
