Let’s take a look at how LED headlights are different from halogen lights.
1. LED Headlight Bulbs :
LED light bulbs are also known as Light Emitting Diodes. They are better compared to halogen lights.
a.) LEDs are generated based on semiconductor technology that gives out visible light when an electrical current passes through them. They give off the most accurate color of white only when they’re at their best condition called “luminescent flux”. The right shade is about 6000k or 5000k which is much whiter compared to other headlights at 3200k or 4300k.
b.) LEDs need less voltage and wattage hence save more energy for your vehicle, helping you to conserve resources in future, e.g., fuel consumption rate will be reduced hence you’ll spend less money on gas.
c.) LEDs last long, up to 30000 hours or more. For example, a 100-watt traditional halogen bulb will just give out 1000 lumens in one hour whereas a 60-watt LED headlight will yield 1200 lumens in an hour. The former needs to be replaced after 2000 hours while the latter can still work perfectly fine after 35000 hours of usage which is about 15 years! So when it comes time for replacement, you may consider upgrading to higher wattage instead to get even brighter output so that your visibility won’t be compromised under nights and poor weather conditions.
d.) LEDs have lower failure rates compared with other headlights. Halogens often fade out after a period of time. Although this is not hazardous, it is inconvenient since you have to wait until the light fades before you can turn on your lights again. LEDs are more durable especially if they’re designed with “chips” that are lead-free.
2. LED Headlight Assembly :
An LED headlight assembly uses LEDs as bulbs for its headlights instead of halogen lights. So what makes them different from the usual headlights? The difference lies in their electronic components, design, and engineering which make them better compared to other types of headlights currently available today.
a.) LED headlight assemblies are made up of CREE, OSRAM, or PIAA high-quality LEDs which are known for its brightness and efficiency. This provides better road illumination compared to halogen lights as the latter only give out about 800 lumens per bulb, whereas LED headlight assemblies can yield up to 30000 lumens per pair.
b.) These headlights are designed with cooling fans that keep the temperature low for LEDs which generate too much heat under constant usage; they can be very hot up to 180o Celsius! The lower power consumption rate of these headlights also contribute in dissipating heat quickly so that there’s no need to worry about them getting burned or melted especially during summers.
c.) Newer models have better mounting brackets so you won’t have any problem installing them on your favorite vehicle even if it’s older than 2012! You can still find some good LED headlight assemblies in the market but you might need to take out a screw or two during installation in order to securely fit them onto your vehicle.
d.) Compared to halogen lights, LED headlights have fewer components and wiring which relaxes the flash-to-pass function on your car. This enables other motorists who are behind you to easily notice when you turn or change lanes so that they won’t wreck into your vehicle especially when it comes at night.
Halogen Headlight Bulbs vs LED Headlight Bulb :
Halogen headlights consist of a few parts such as a glass bulb, filament, gas mixture, and a starter switch amongst others. These halogens can be replaced with LED light bulbs if you prefer to save more on gas mileage and have a brighter headlight that’s energy efficient. LED assembly has a few parts as well, but comprising of several LEDs instead of one filament inside a glass bulb which is what halogen lights have. a.) Halogen headlights are cheaper compared with its LED counterpart as they only require 1 to 2 bulbs for their whole headlight assembly whereas LEDs typically need up to 50 or more LEDs per pair. However, even though halogens are cheap, it may cost too much money in maintenance especially when these parts burn out; most people turn to replacement since they’re available almost everywhere hence cutting down your vehicle’s resale value.
b.) Since LED headlight assemblies are composed of high-quality LEDs, they last for more than 100000 hours under normal usage. Although there are still some rare cases wherein these lights fail after 20000 to 30000 hours of use, you can easily avoid this problem by always taking care of them while driving or else you might end up spending too much money on replacements while halogen headlights only require maintenance every 6 months to a year.
c.) Heat is not really an issue with LED headlights since its cooling fans help regulate the temperature inside the light assembly. Halogens, on the other hand, get very hot especially when used extensively which can be hazardous if it touches human skin! You’ll need to install some extra protection onto your headlights to avoid this from happening which could cost more money.
d.) LEDs are brighter compared with halogen lights since these LED headlight assemblies use high-quality CREE, OSRAM, or PIAA LEDs which can produce about 30000 lumens per pair of headlights. Halogens only yield about 800 lumens per bulb which means you’ll need a minimum of 1 headlight assembly composed of two bulbs if not 2 light assemblies, just to match the brightness of one LED headlight!
e.) There are some major disadvantages as well with using LED headlights because by design it has a low beam pattern unlike halogen lights that have a high and low beam pattern. This creates a blind spot for other motorists during night time as they might get blinded by your headlights which makes it hard to see the road. It’s best that you opt for high-beam halogen lights if this is what you prefer or mount a set of auxiliary driving lights in front in order to provide adequate visibility during night time.
Pros and Cons between Halogen Headlight Bulbs vs LED Headlight Bulb :
Both types of headlights have their own pros and cons when mounted on your vehicle so here are some guidelines to help you decide whether to stick with halogens or change them out with LEDs:
Pros of Halogen headlights :
a.) They’re cheap! Although the price varies depending on where they’re purchased, halogen bulbs are much cheaper compared with LEDs due to its design. Halogens have a built-in filament inside a glass bulb so it’s easier to manufacture and replace if one part burns out or fails for some reason.
b.) Some halogen headlights can produce a bright white light, perfect for driving during the night as long as the vehicle has no high-beam requirements because these lights aren’t really that bright to begin with.
c.) They’re compact which makes mounting them onto your headlight assembly much easier compared with LEDs because these latter types need separate cooling fans installed into it just to regulate the temperature inside the light housing.
d.) The color of halogen headlights are more agreeable compared with LED bulbs for cars since LED lights tend to emit bluish hues which may affect how colors of your car’s paint appear to other motorists.
e.) Halogens are more durable compared with LEDs because of its built-in filament and fused quartz glass. LED headlights, on the other hand, only last for about 30000 hours at best which means you’ll need to change them out every 18000 – 24000 hours or 1 year depending on how often you use them, just like halogen headlights that require maintenance every 6 months to a year.
Pros of LED Headlights :
a.) They’re brighter than halogen lights! Even though there are some high beam halogen lights available in the market today that produce up to 5200 lumens per bulb , it still cannot match the luminosity LED headlight assemblies which can produce up to 30000 lumens per headlight, a total of 60000 lumens for a pair.
b.) The color rendering index for LEDs are much better compared with halogen headlights which can yield about 12000/15000 K temperature rating, the same as incandescent bulbs. LED lights have a specific CRI (color rendering index) of 90+ or even higher depending on brand and model so it accurately renders colors more effectively when used at night during inclement weather conditions such as rain.
c.) They’re much easier to install since LED headlights come with pre-assembled parts including cooling fans built right into the assembly which makes them perfect replacement units no matter what size your light housing is Halogens, on the other hand, needs ballasts and igniters installed to the housing itself before you can mount them which requires a bit of expertise when doing so.
d.) LED headlights last a lot longer compared with halogen bulbs because they have an average lifespan of 100000 hours or up to 11 years which is way better than halogens during night time driving.
e.) LEDs doesn’t emit much heat so it’s perfect for cars that require both high and low beams. Halogen lights tend to produce a lot of heat after being used for a certain span of time especially if your vehicle has separate HID units installed as well. This makes LEDs great options for even those vehicles with built-in headlight leveling systems since these units are made up from sensitive semiconductors that may be damaged by excessive heat produced by halogen headlights.
f.) LED lights are much safer to use especially on cars that have dashboards equipped with warning lights which might cause the “check engine” light to appear when you’re using halogens during night time driving. The high voltage current running through the filament in your headlight assembly can trigger this particular warning lamp, resulting in alerts being sent to other motorists so it’s best to avoid using these conventional types of bulbs before checking with a licensed mechanic if there are problems with your vehicle’s electrical systems since it may lead to expensive repairs.
