In recent years, Nissan joined the crossover trend with another model called Kicks. Following the steps of the Juke, it is a compact vehicle offering more room than a hatchback, but with more or less the same features. The Kicks is not a premium model, meaning that in most cases, you will be looking at LED headlights at best. The test we’ll run today is based on the 2018 Nissan Kicks S. The model starts at $17,034 and goes up to $21,063 for a fully loaded version.

As I mentioned earlier, there is not much difference between Juke and Kicks when it comes to features. And the same applies to headlights which are not LEDs even in upper trims. But since you are interested in this article, you must be looking for something more than just an option to upgrade your ride’s lights with LED technology. This means that aftermarket options are what interests you most because LEDs are known for their high durability compared to halogen bulbs which usually fail within weeks or months of use.

This interest in aftermarket LED options is understandable, considering the myriad of benefits they offer. Unlike traditional halogen bulbs, LED headlights provide a much brighter and clearer light, enhancing visibility significantly, especially in adverse weather conditions or during night driving. Moreover, LEDs consume less power, which can be a boon for your vehicle’s electrical system, and by extension, its battery life.

But the advantages don’t end there. LED lights have a sleek, modern aesthetic that can dramatically improve the appearance of your vehicle. This is not just about style – it’s also about safety. A well-lit car is more visible to other drivers, reducing the risk of accidents. Additionally, LEDs are known for their longer lifespan, often lasting as long as the vehicle itself, which means fewer replacements and, consequently, less maintenance hassle and cost.

Reasons for replacing or upgrading the bulbs on a Nissan Kicks

There are two reasons for the need to replace or upgrade the bulbs.

As time goes by, older types of bulbs wear out and stop working. When that happens, the light in that part of the car doesn’t work, meaning that it may be unsafe to drive it, especially if it is one of the exterior lights. In these situations, it is imperative to replace them.

Some trim levels of the Kicks offer LED headlights, but the other bulbs around the vehicle may be the older types. So, picking up an LED upgrade kit will enable you to replace them with LEDs to eliminate the outdated types of bulbs on your vehicle.

One of the things you should know is that LED lights last much longer than ordinary bulbs. This means that even if you replace your vehicle’s old lights with new LEDs, they will ensure their service towards you for a long time to come.

Another benefit of using LED bulbs in place of the older types is how they look on your ride and how bright and safe they make it to drive at night. We all want our rides to look appealing and presentable, but we also need them to be safe. So having some shiny LEDs installed can do both jobs easily.

The Kicks come with halogen headlight units that are averagely bright (which is quite sufficient). But if brighter lights suit your tastes better, you can always install a LED kit to make it better.

What are the upsides to installing LED bulbs on a Nissan Kicks?

Even though the Kicks is a relatively new model, sooner or later you will be in a situation where you will need to replace a broken bulb. When you replace it with an LED, you will be getting a bulb that will last much longer than halogen or HID, at least five times longer.

The design behind the LED bulbs allows them to use much less power than traditional bulbs, meaning that you will be getting efficient and longer running bulbs.

Most of the LED bulbs can be found in various colors. This means that you can change the color inside with a simple swap of a bulb.

Most Kicks models have sockets designed to take H13 or 9003 type of bulbs, but some might need wiring modifications before installation because not all LEDs are also polarity sensitive.

How to replace a bulb from a headlight on a Nissan Kicks?

The headlights a mounted fairly high on the car, so access to them is very easy.

Before you begin, disconnect the power cables from the car’s battery to prevent any kind of damage to the electrical parts.

Find the bulb on the back of the headlight assembly, grab it by the connector and turn it counterclockwise until it loosens up. Pull back the bulb and detach it from the connector. Replace the bulb and plug the connector in. Insert the bulb in the same orientation as the one you removed and turn it clockwise.

How long would the original bulbs on my Nissan Kicks last?

The answer to this question is not exact, and it depends on the type of bulbs installed. Halogen bulbs can last for several thousand working hours, while HID may go twice or three times longer.

The average life span of an automotive bulb is between 750 – 1000 hours. This time period may vary depending on the type and brand of a bulb and the way it’s used (how often and for how long do you use your headlights, parking, or indicator lights).

The main reason that causes early bulb failure is voltage drop. If voltage delivered from the car battery to the bulb is not enough then problems start to appear. Voltage drop can be caused by corrosion, poor connection at plugs and sockets as well as some other factors such as damage to wires or load added in a wiring harness when installing aftermarket electrical equipment. The latter problem has become more common since cars are equipped with ever more sophisticated onboard systems nowadays, thus additional devices are being added to the original electrical system.

If you want your bulbs to last longer, then we recommend that you check all wires and connectors which are responsible for the power supply to a headlight, parking light, or any other bulb in your car’s lighting unit. Clean them with sandpaper (if necessary) and apply dielectric grease before attaching the plugs and sockets. If the voltage at plugs is okay but there is still a problem with your headlights or indicator lights, then it means that the bulb is defective and needs replacement. Here comes another tip: use only original spare parts when replacing automotive bulbs. These parts have been manufactured according to quality standards and do not damage associated wiring harnesses usually installed on cars these days.

Will the LED bulbs be brighter than the original bulbs?

Yes, but it depends on the installed bulbs. They are rated based on the number of lumens they can generate, and LED bulbs can create more lumens than halogen or HID bulbs.
