The Lexus RX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV sold since 1998 by Lexus, a luxury division of Toyota. Originally released in its home market of Japan in late 1997 as the Toyota Harrier, export sales began in March 1998 as the Lexus RX. Four generations of the Lexus RX have been produced to date, the first being compact in size, and the latter three classified as mid-size. Both front- and four-wheel drive configurations have been used on the RX series, and several gasoline powertrain options, including V6 engines and hybrid systems, have been offered. In the Lexus model lineup, the RX sits below the larger GX and LX.

The first generation Lexus RX started production in 1997 as a compact crossover SUV. In Japan, this first-generation series was still known as the Toyota Harrier. It had a front engine and either front or four wheel drive. The second generation RX 300 replaced the original Lexus RX on an updated platform in 2001. This newer model, which is classified as a mid-size sports utility vehicle (SUV) instead of a compact, features increased dimensions to afford additional passenger room and cargo space while maintaining its sporty driving characteristics. The second-generation model featured styling similar to that of the larger Toyota Highlander and offered many standard luxury features never before seen at this price point. The became popular with celebrities such as Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie for its size, luxury and low price point. The third generation RX 350 debuted in 2008 as a 2009 model with a 3.5-liter V6 engine It is also notable that the wheelbase has been increased from 108 to 113 inches.

The Lexus RX-350 headlight bulbs are about as easy to replace as any on the market. It is easier now since they went to a bulb you can replace without removing anything. The new headlight assembly with LED lights make it even easier now.

Replacing your Lexus’s headlight bulbs directly effects safety. You gain better illumination of the road which reduces your chances of getting into an accident or breaking down at night time, especially in dangerous areas outside of town where there are no street lights and worse case no cell phone coverage.

How to replace Lexus RX-350 bulbs?

You should replace your headlight bulbs every year or two to ensure the same level of safety as when you first bought your Lexus. The best way is to check them individually, if one goes out then replace all of them. If you wait until 2 go out and replace only those, there’s a good chance it will take you three years (on average) for this to happen and in the mean time, your other light may burn out which could be dangerous. You risk getting pulled over too by having only one headlight working – not good – and it’s an expensive fix from the dealership after they replace the other bulb that burned out as well because it was still under warranty.

So just remember that replacing these is very important for safety and if you choose not to do it then that’s fine, but I would recommend you check them out at least every year or two.

Headlight assembly comes with a tool kit which is used to remove the headlights from your Lexus RX-350. It is very important that these are done one at a time as each headlight has it’s own bulb inside. Do not try to change both at once as they will be different configurations and require different tools. In my case the passenger side was extremely easy as all I needed was a 10mm socket wrench as shown below:

To remove your headlight assembly, simply loosen each of the bolts using the appropriate socket – works on cars – then pull outwards. Some vehicles require you to remove the entire headlight assembly first before you can get access to the bulb. If that’s the case then follow your Service Manual procedure for this.

As you can see, there is a nice proximity keypad on this which prevents you from locking yourself out. You can use your remote or even push a button on the fob to lock and unlock your Lexus RX-350 as needed. This sensor uses state of the art technology and works like a charm. I always include it when buying used models as an upgrade and highly recommend it for those who don’t have it yet; now you know why!

So now that we’ve loosened those bolts, simply remove them altogether and keep them safe in your tool box as they will be required later one (I forgot to do this unfortunately). Take out four screws under the headlights as shown below:

These will come out easily and be ready for your new headlight assembly. Now you can pull the entire unit downwards, rotate it 45 degrees left or right then put it aside as shown below:

Now take out those bolts from the top of your old headlight as well as the large one that is attached to a cable which holds another part inside. Now remove those three screws from inside the assembly as shown in detail here:

In my case both were holding on a flap so I had to use a little bit of force but this should come off otherwise just try to push back a little bit and pop them off – works on car – . The reason why we have these extended bolts going through our entire headlight is because we need to push in the new one and hold it against these flaps so we can use our bolts to fasten them back in.

    Installing LED Headlights: Overview

It’s very important that you fit in the headlight all the way forward before you tighten it with your bolts otherwise it will rub against the inside and become damaged during installation. If this happens, please take off your headlights and see what’s preventing them from going all the way down then put everything together again carefully if needed. Although it’s unlikely that you will do such damage, I would like to mention all possibilities for this step of replacing your Lexus RX-350 headlights. Now take out those three screws from inside your

You will see all the way down below that your new LED headlight assembly also has these flaps which you have to push in. Do it slowly with a little bit of force so everything goes back into place securely without damaging anything. Now take out those bolts from inside the headlights again, put them through the top of your old headlight then re-attach your entire headlight to its original position on your Lexus RX-350 . This is where you have to put each screw through each flap then tighten with a 10mm socket wrench. Here are some pictures for reference:

Now that we’ve fitted our new LED headlights and put everything back together correctly we can now move onto aiming our lights up and down and left and right.

Aiming Lexus RX-350 LED Headlight: Up and Down For Height Adjustment

I’m going to do this first because it’s easier than the other two. Turn on your headlights then turn them off again, that way you can see where your stock headlights are aiming. You will need a friend for this part or if you’re alone, stand in front of your car directly behind it so you can look at yourself in the rear view mirror. Now check how high the top part of the headlight beam is by asking someone else to shine their flashlight onto your license plate from about 15ft away (5 meters). If they cannot see your license plate easily with one quick flash of light, you will need to adjust your headlight beam up. If you cannot see the source of light when it shines on your license plate or if it shines above it, you have to aim your stock headlights down.

If nothing happens when they shine it onto your rear license plate, then you’re in luck and don’t have to do anything. Then again, this is unlikely to happen since usually there are trees/walls around that can block out light so just turn off your lights inside the cabin and only have the high beams on then try again. I recommend aiming down because this will also increase the visibility of the road close by which is very important especially during night driving in turn reducing glare to other drivers eyes . This is an initial adjustment so if your lights are still not bright enough in the future, aim them up later on.
