How to Change Headlight Bulbs on the Hyundai Veloster
First produced in 2011 by the Hyundai Motor Company, the Hyundai Veloster is a compact coupe that replaced the Hyundai Tiburon. Perhaps the thing that people will find the most strange about the Veloster is its asymmetrical door configuration. The sporty coupe has one large door on the driver’s side while two smaller doors make up the opposite side of the vehicle. This particular configuration is more common on minivans than cars. The Veloster’s engine comes in both turbo and non-turbo versions. Like most Hyundai products, the Veloster has a reputation among consumers of being very safe and reliable.
This car maintenance tutorial will show you how to change burnt-out low beam and high beam light bulbs on the 2012 to 2017 Hyundai Veloster model years. It may also be helpful to owners of the current model Veloster, as well as owners of other Hyundai vehicles like the Elantra, Sonata, Accent, and Tiburon. The instructions in this do-it-yourself guide may also help those who own KIA cars like the Rio, Forte, and Spectra.
You will need two bulbs (part number #H7} for each headlamp assembly: one bulb for the low beam and another bulb for the high beam. Since changing the bulbs is more or less a simple task, you will not really any tools, aside from a firm grip and maybe a flat screwdriver for prying electrical connections apart.
To change the bulbs, follow these steps carefully:
Step 1
Pop the hood open and move to the headlight housing where you want to change the burnt-out bulb. It is advisable to change bulbs in both left and right headlights so you will have even illumination on both sides of the vehicle. Keep the old yet functioning bulb as a spare.
Step 2
Look for the low beam bulb; you can find it somewhere in the middle of the headlight assembly. Reach in behind the headlight and carefully twist the black plastic dust cap anti-clockwise. Set this dust cap aside in a safe place.
Step 3
Again, twist the base of the bulb and the electrical contact anti-clockwise until it becomes loose, then carefully pull it out of the housing. Make sure you don’t pull it by the wires as they may get ripped off.
Step 4
Gently pull the connectors off the old bulb, then set the bulb aside. Take the new #H7 low beam headlight bulb in your hand, then carefully push the electrical connector onto the contact points at the base of the new bulb.
Step 5
Put the bulb into the headlight housing, insert the dust cover back in, then rotate it clockwise, making sure it’s tightened properly.
Absolutely do not touch the glass part of the bulb with your fingers or anything oily or greasy! Doing this will leave smudges or cloudy areas on the bulb which will affect the new bulb’s brightness. If this happens, carefully wipe the area clean with a paper towel moistened with rubbing alcohol until all the smudges or oily/cloudy areas are gone.
Step 6
Locate the high beam headlight compartment. It is found on the side of the housing closest to the center of the car. Open the high beam bulb compartment by turning the black plastic dust cover anti-clockwise. Set the cover aside in a safe place.
Step 7
Perform steps 3 to 5. Repeat the same steps for the other side.
Step 8
Test the headlights if they function properly by turning them on, then flicking the low/high beam control lever (They should if you’ve followed the instructions to the letter!).
Whether they have poor eyesight or just find it too dark, some people find driving at night difficult. Fortunately for these people, and thanks to advancements in technology, better lighting systems are now available for cars and other kinds of vehicles. Most of the cars today are already fitted by the factory with projector lamps. Some cars even come already with xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps, especially the top-of-the-line models or the high-end expensive brands. Xenon HID lamps produce a bright and intense beam of light that illuminates the road ahead quite well, making night drivers much easier and safer.
You can modify your car’s lighting system with an aftermarket HID conversion kit if your car did not come with this option. There are many brands available for xenon HID conversion kits, like XtremHID, Bosch, XenonHID, or Philips. Usually, these kits come with everything you need, from electrical harnesses and ballasts, relays, and capacitors. You do have to make sure that the kit you are buying is specified for your car. Give the vendor your car’s vehicle identification number (VIN); this would be useful in finding out if the item you’re buying is suitable for your Veloster. It would be a good idea to ask the advice of another Veloster owner who has done this kind of conversion. Joining a Veloster club would also be very helpful as the members would certainly be willing to help you out with any questions or problems you may have.
You’ll have to follow the instructions on the conversion kit if you want your headlamps to function properly. If you think you can’t do the job, get the services of a certified automotive electrician to perform the modification. Everything should be done correctly, as Improperly connected wiring may result in electrical fires.
Installing a conversion kit should be a piece of cake for you if you’re fairly knowledgeable about car repairs. Even if you’re not, just following the instructions to the letter will give you satisfactory results. It doesn’t really take a rocket scientist to do it.
While you can always have someone do the job for you, doing it yourself will always give you the satisfaction you can’t get anywhere else, especially if you’ve done a really good job of it!
