Headlight bulb markings identify a bulb’s standardized size and design. Common examples include H7, H11, 9005, and 9006. A bulb number is not a universal vehicle fitment code. The same bulb can be used by many makes and models, while one vehicle may use different bulbs for low beam, high beam, fog lamps, or daytime running lights. Always confirm the bulb position and the vehicle-specific application before purchasing.
How H-Series Bulb Numbers Work
Bulbs beginning with the letter H are part of the standardized European-style H-series naming system. The number identifies the bulb design, including its base, filament arrangement, and electrical characteristics. For example, H7 and H11 are not interchangeable simply because both are single-filament halogen bulbs.
- H7: A common single-filament bulb used for either low beam or high beam, depending on the vehicle. It has a different mounting base and connector arrangement from H11.
- H11: A single-filament bulb commonly used for low beams or fog lamps. Its base and connector are different from H7, so it should not be forced into an H7 socket.
- H1, H3, and H4: Other H-series designs with different bases and applications. H4 is a dual-filament bulb commonly used where one bulb provides both high and low beam functions.
The number itself is an identifier, not a measurement of bulb diameter or brightness. A higher number does not mean a brighter or more powerful bulb.
How 9005, 9006, and Similar Numbers Work
Bulbs with four-digit numbers are commonly identified using North American bulb designations. 9005 is also commonly known as HB3, while 9006 is commonly known as HB4. These bulbs have different bases and beam applications, even though their names look similar.
- 9005/HB3: Often used for high-beam headlights or certain auxiliary lighting applications.
- 9006/HB4: Often used for low-beam headlights or fog lamps.
- 9007/HB5: A dual-filament design that can provide both high and low beam from one bulb.
- 9012: A related design used in some applications, but it should only be installed where the vehicle and housing are designed for it.
These common applications are only guidelines. The bulb position can vary by vehicle, headlamp assembly, market, and trim level. Check the owner’s manual or an application guide instead of assuming that 9005 always means high beam or 9006 always means low beam.
Letters and Suffixes After the Bulb Number
Additional letters can describe a variation of the base bulb. A suffix may indicate a different connector, shield, coating, filament arrangement, or intended lighting use. For example, some bulbs may have markings related to weather protection, infrared coatings, or manufacturer-specific versions.
Do not assume that a bulb with a similar-looking suffix is a direct replacement. Compare the complete marking, base shape, connector, wattage, and application information. A bulb that fits physically may still have the wrong beam pattern or electrical load.
Where to Find the Correct Number
Start with the vehicle owner’s manual, which may list bulb sizes by lighting position. You can also inspect the old bulb after removing it safely. The part number is usually printed or molded on the bulb base, plastic housing, or metal collar. Packaging from a previous replacement can help, but it may not be reliable if the wrong bulb was installed before.
Online parts catalogs can be useful, but enter the complete vehicle information: year, make, model, body style, trim, and lighting position. If the catalog lists multiple options, verify the bulb against the existing socket and the manual.
Checks Before Installing a Replacement
- Match the position: Confirm whether the bulb is for low beam, high beam, fog lamp, daytime running light, or another function.
- Compare the base: The locating tabs and locking ring must match the original. Never modify tabs to make an incorrect bulb fit.
- Check the connector: The plug should lock onto the bulb without excessive force or loose terminals.
- Confirm voltage and wattage: Use the rating specified for the vehicle. Higher wattage can overheat wiring, connectors, or the headlamp housing.
- Inspect the bulb type: Halogen, HID, and LED systems use different components and may not be interchangeable.
- Test the beam: After installation, verify operation and aim. A bulb that lights up can still be seated incorrectly and produce an unsafe beam pattern.
Halogen, HID, and LED Markings
Many H-series and 9000-series numbers originally identify halogen bulbs. Replacement LED products may advertise compatibility with an H7, H11, or 9005 socket, but that does not guarantee the same beam pattern, glare control, or legal approval as the original halogen bulb. Some LED conversions also require adapters, dust caps, or an error-canceling module.
HID systems generally use different bulb and ballast components. Do not substitute a halogen bulb based only on a similar number. If the vehicle was designed for HID or LED lighting, follow the manufacturer’s replacement procedure and use components intended for that system.
Simple Rule for Decoding Any Bulb Number
Read the marking as a starting point, not the entire fitment answer. Identify the complete bulb code, match it to the correct lighting position, compare the base and connector, and confirm the vehicle application. This process prevents the most common mistake: buying a bulb that looks similar or fits loosely but does not produce the correct light output.
