H4 vs. H7 Headlight Bulbs: What Is the Difference?
H4 and H7 are common automotive headlight bulb types, but they are not interchangeable. The main difference is how each bulb produces low- and high-beam light. An H4 bulb uses two filaments in one bulb to provide both beams. An H7 bulb uses one filament and normally serves only one beam position, such as low beam or high beam.
Choosing the correct bulb is not just a matter of matching the wattage or inserting a bulb that looks similar. The base, connector, filament position, and headlamp housing must all match the vehicle. Using the wrong type can prevent the bulb from fitting, produce an incorrect beam pattern, or damage the socket.
H4 Bulbs: One Bulb for Low and High Beam
An H4 bulb is a dual-filament headlight bulb. One filament produces the low beam, while the second produces the high beam. In vehicles designed for H4 bulbs, a single bulb generally handles both functions on each side of the vehicle.
H4 bulbs commonly use a three-terminal connector because the bulb has separate electrical connections for the low-beam filament, high-beam filament, and shared ground. The bulb also has a locating flange and tabs that position it in the reflector or projector housing. These features help place the filaments at the correct focal point for the intended beam pattern.

Because the filament location is part of the optical design, an H7 bulb cannot be substituted for an H4 simply by changing the connector.

How to Confirm Which Bulb You Need

Some vehicles use different bulb types for different trim levels, model years, or headlamp assemblies, so a general vehicle description is not always enough.
- Read the existing bulb: Remove the bulb only after the lamp has cooled, then look for the designation printed on the metal base or glass. Avoid touching halogen glass with bare fingers.
- Inspect the socket and holder: Compare the number of terminals, the locating tabs, and the retaining clip with the replacement bulb.
- Check the lamp position: Determine whether you are replacing the low beam, high beam, or a combined low/high-beam bulb.

Can an H7 Replace an H4?
In normal installations, no. H4 and H7 bulbs have different electrical designs and mounting systems. An H7 cannot provide both low and high beam in a housing designed for a single H4 bulb. An H4 also cannot be used correctly in an H7 position designed for a single-filament bulb.
Adapters or modified wiring may be available for specialized conversions, but they are not a simple bulb swap. Such changes can alter the beam pattern, overload wiring, create poor weather sealing, or cause road-safety and inspection problems. For a dependable repair, use the bulb type specified for the headlamp assembly.
Halogen, LED, and Installation Notes
H4 and H7 designations describe the bulb fitment and optical format, not a guarantee of identical performance across brands. Higher-output halogen bulbs may have stricter voltage or installation requirements. LED replacement versions also need careful checking because the LED emitter position may not match the original filament position. A bulb that fits the socket can still produce glare or an unsafe beam pattern.
Install the bulb fully into its locating flange, secure the retaining clip, and reconnect the plug without forcing it. After installation, test low and high beam functions and confirm that the bulb is aimed correctly. Replace bulbs in pairs when practical so both sides have similar color and brightness.
