What the 9000-Series Bulb Numbers Mean

9000-series headlight bulbs are common automotive halogen bulbs identified by numbers such as 9004, 9005, 9006, and 9007. These numbers describe a bulb’s standardized design, including its base, electrical connections, filament arrangement, and intended beam function. They are not interchangeable simply because the numbers look similar.

The same bulb may also have an industry designation. For example, 9005 is commonly called HB3, while 9006 is commonly called HB4. 9004 is also known as HB1, and 9007 is known as HB5. When shopping, compare both designations when available, but confirm the exact bulb listed for your vehicle before buying.

9004 and 9007: Dual-Beam Bulbs

9004 (HB1)

The 9004 is a dual-filament bulb designed to provide both low beam and high beam from one bulb. It is often used in headlamp assemblies where a single bulb serves both beam functions. The two filaments are positioned and powered separately, so the bulb can produce different beam patterns without physically moving.

9007 (HB5)

The 9007 also uses two filaments for low- and high-beam operation. However, its base, connector arrangement, and optical design are different from the 9004. A 9007 should not be treated as a direct replacement for a 9004 unless a reliable application guide specifically lists it for that headlamp.

Even though both bulbs are dual-beam types, their tabs and terminals can prevent installation in the wrong socket. Never cut tabs, bend terminals, or force a bulb into place to make an apparent substitute fit. Incorrect positioning can produce poor beam control and glare for oncoming drivers.

9005 and 9006: Single-Beam Bulbs

9005 (HB3)

The 9005 is generally used as a single-filament high-beam bulb, although exact application depends on the vehicle’s headlamp design. It has a different base and beam-function setup from the 9006. Some replacement bulbs are marketed for high-output or off-road use, but increased brightness claims do not guarantee a legal or properly focused road beam.

9006 (HB4)

The 9006 is generally used as a single-filament low-beam bulb. It is designed for a different optical role than the 9005, including the way the filament sits in relation to the reflector or projector. Installing a 9005 where a 9006 belongs can create excessive glare, an incorrect cutoff, or an unusable beam even if an adapter makes the electrical connection possible.

9005 and 9006 bulbs may look related and can share some general construction features, but they are not automatically interchangeable. Their mounting tabs, connector details, filament placement, and weather seals must all match.

Some enthusiasts discuss modifying tabs or converting between related bulbs, but these changes can affect seating, aiming, heat management, and legality.

Do not assume that a higher-numbered or higher-output bulb is a safe upgrade. The headlamp housing must be designed for that bulb, and the vehicle’s wiring, fuse capacity, connector, and lamp temperature limits must be suitable.

How to Confirm the Correct Bulb

  1. Check the owner’s manual or the bulb label in the vehicle’s service information.
  2. Inspect the old bulb for its molded number, such as 9004, 9005, 9006, or 9007.
  3. Use a reputable parts catalog and verify the vehicle’s year, make, model, trim, and headlamp type.
  4. Compare the replacement bulb’s base, locking tabs, connector, and rubber seal with the original.
  5. Confirm whether the headlamp uses one dual-beam bulb or separate bulbs for low and high beam.

Some vehicles use different bulbs on the same model depending on trim or headlamp assembly. If the catalog and the bulb installed in the vehicle disagree, investigate before installing anything. A previous owner may have installed an incorrect part, or the headlamp assembly may have been replaced.

Installation and Testing Tips

Turn off the lights and let the bulb cool before removal. Avoid touching a halogen bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oils can create hot spots and shorten bulb life. Hold it by the plastic base or use clean gloves. Seat the bulb fully and lock the connector before testing.

After installation, check low beam, high beam, and any automatic lighting functions. Verify that both sides illuminate evenly and that the beam pattern remains properly aimed. If the bulb does not work, inspect the connector, ground, fuse, and bulb orientation rather than forcing the socket. Replace halogen bulbs in pairs when practical so both sides have similar color and output.
