1156 and 1157 bulbs can look nearly identical, but they are designed for different sockets and lighting functions. The main difference is simple: an 1156 bulb has one electrical contact and one filament, while an 1157 bulb has two electrical contacts and two filaments.

That difference affects how the bulb operates, how bright it can be, and whether it fits the vehicle socket. Before buying a replacement, check the bulb number, socket, vehicle manual, and the original bulb.

1156 Bulb: Single Contact and Single Filament

An 1156 bulb is a single-function bulb. It has one filament and one contact on the bottom of its metal base. The metal shell commonly serves as the ground connection. When power is applied, the bulb operates at one brightness level.

1156 bulbs are commonly used for functions that need only on or off operation, such as reverse lights, some turn signals, side-marker lights, and certain auxiliary lamps. The exact use varies by vehicle, so the bulb number should always be confirmed for the specific application.

1157 Bulb: Dual Contact and Dual Filament

This arrangement allows one bulb to provide both a dim running-light function and a brighter warning-light function. The vehicle wiring controls which filament is illuminated.

Never force a bulb into the socket, because doing so can bend the contacts, damage the socket, or create a poor connection.

An 1156 bulb installed in an 1157 circuit cannot provide the two separate lighting levels. Depending on the socket and design, it may not lock correctly, may illuminate only one circuit, or may cause an unreliable connection. An 1157 bulb in an 1156 application may not seat correctly and can connect improperly.

How to Check Which Bulb You Need

Read the old bulb

Remove the bulb carefully and inspect the marking printed or stamped on its base. Look for 1156, 1157, or an equivalent number listed in the owner’s manual. Bulb markings can become faint, so confirm the result with another source.

Inspect the contacts

Look at the bottom of the bulb. One contact indicates a single-contact design; two separate contacts indicate a dual-contact design. Also inspect the socket for corrosion, melted plastic, loose terminals, or bent contacts.

Check the locking pins

Compare the position of the small pins on the metal base. Single-contact and dual-contact versions commonly use different pin positions. The replacement should lock into the socket without force and should sit at the same depth as the original.

Verify the application

Use the vehicle owner’s manual, a trusted parts catalog, or the marking on the removed bulb. Do not identify the bulb only by appearance. Some vehicles use related bulb families or special versions with different power ratings, bases, or dimensions.

LED Replacement Considerations

LED replacements are available in both 1156-style and 1157-style configurations. Choose an LED with the same base and contact arrangement as the original bulb. A single-contact LED cannot replace a dual-contact bulb when both tail and brake functions are required.

LED bulbs are polarity-sensitive, so an LED that does not light may need to be removed and rotated 180 degrees in the socket. Some vehicles may also experience turn-signal hyperflash, bulb-out warnings, or compatibility problems after installing LEDs. A compatible resistor, flasher, or vehicle-specific LED solution may be required, but resistors can become very hot and must be installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
