Installation
The Ford EcoSport has halogen lamps for both the front and rear light assemblies. Halogen bulbs are basic yet provide a robust solution for people who are not looking to have their car lighting setup modified extensively, especially when it comes to having Xenon HID lights.
Ford says there’s no straightforward way of changing the stock EcoSport headlight assembly, so let us explore some options for this task.
What you need:
Required tools: A Phillips head screwdriver. Wire cutter/stripper.
Optional tools: A set of automotive crimps and a blade style fuse puller or a soldering gun with a 1 mm solder bit.
Required materials: Two new halogen bulbs – 135-4111 / 2825LL for the front lamps and 1156A / 21W for the rear lamps. Four “Butyl Rubber Seals” (Ford names them as Grease Nipple) used to seal brake/clutch fluid reservoirs from dust entering into it.
An old rag or disposable piece of cloth for cleaning up spills on surfaces, making sure not to wipe dirt back onto your freshly cleaned area – this is common sense stuff!
Process:
Step 1 – Open the bonnet and get access to the headlight bulbs. The front ones are hidden inside a little plastic shroud that comes out by just pulling at it, while the rear ones require you to remove two screws from their base and unclip them from their bracket before taking them off.
If you’re not sure where the brake fluid reservoirs are on your car, simply consult your owner’s manual or look for them online by searching for images of your car with “brake fluid” followed by its model designation.
Step 2 – Locate and open up both ends of each bulb assembly/housing, exposing the light sockets inside. Use a screwdriver for this task if possible, but otherwise, you can always resort to pulling them apart with your hands.
If you do have the option, it’s recommended that you open up the housing by putting pressure on all sides at once with a tool, as shown in the image below.
This way you’re preventing any potential damage from occurring during the process if the plastic starts fracturing or splitting into pieces.
Step 3 – Unscrew each bulb out of its housing by turning it about 90 degrees counterclockwise with your fingers (on Vitos) or using a screwdriver for this task (on Ford India models).
Set both bulbs aside safely without touching their glass portions, as they are very fragile and may break if mishandled.
Step 4 – Insert each new halogen bulb inside its respective socket head assembly and turn each of the 90 degrees clockwise until they lock in place.
Step 5 – Put everything back together and test out your work by having the car on and the lights turned on and switched to a high beam before you put the bonnet down for good.
Make sure that there’s no water or dampness inside either headlight assembly, as this could cause issues with initial lighting behavior once you start up your engine.
And here we have it – a halogen bulb replacement job finished just like that! Check out how much brighter than stock these new bulbs are as well as their more bluish tint compared to standard yellowish Xenon HID color temperature:
If anything goes wrong with any aspect of the process during installation, simply reverse the steps to get your car back into the state it was in prior to starting this guide.
Although there’s no “right” or “wrong way” of doing the job, you should always take basic safety precautions when working with tools and automotive components – especially electrical ones!
