The Cadillac Escalade is one of the most luxurious full-size SUVs designed and built by General Motors. It was introduced in 1999 to compete against Ford’s Lincoln Navigator, Mercedes-Benz’s ML-Class and the Lexus LX. The current model features LED lamps for its headlights and fog lights.

    Bulb type used

The first generation (1999-2000) Escalade uses a  special9005 bulb for its headlights and an 894 bulb for its fog lights. The second-generation (2002-2006) uses a 9005 bulb for its high beam headlights, a D1R bulb for its low beam headlights, and an 880 bulb for its fog lights.

The third generation (2007-2014) variant uses LEDs for its high beams and low beams, and a D1S bulb for its high beams and low beams where HID headlights are installed.

The present model, which debuted in 2015, comes with LEDs for its headlights and fog lights.  type of door sill called “illumination”, which is an insert with a bulb attached. The second generation (2000-2007) Escalade also uses the same type of door sill, but it’s no longer equipped with a bulb. It’s now left as an empty hole.

The third generation (2008-) model replaced this illumination by adding “RESCUE STEP” – an stainless steel plate that has a LED light and is located in front and near the rear tire.

My guess for this replacement is that the parent company General Motors wanted to reduce its electrical consumption and asked Cadillac to do so as well. Replacing illumination by stepping makes perfect sense from energy saving point of view since it no longer needs electricity to operate the door sill.

The third (2007-2014) generation Escalade introduced a new type of “illumination”, that I like to call “ILLUMINATION II”. This illumination is located at the rear doors, and can be found with or without HID lights installed. Under this illumination is the DRL (Daytime running light), which unlike the front, becomes brighter when applying fog lights/driving lights. It has two bulbs, one for each door. To replace this bulb you’ll need to remove the sub trim panel on your door(s).

Upgrading from factory bulbs to aftermarket LED/HID headlights

LED headlights were first introduced to the car market in 2004. Since then, car manufacturers have moved from halogen lamps. This is thanks to the energy efficiency that LEDs provide. They also exert less power from the car’s electrical system. When upgrading to LEDs, remember to pick the correct bulb sizes and choose a fitting that is appropriate for your car.  Otherwise, the fitting may overheat or be too dim for your liking.

Below are some tips on how to buy LED headlight bulbs:

    1) Colour temperature

Colour Temperatures are expressed in K (Kelvin). As a general rule, do not go below 5000k for Fogs because it is considered very bright. A good choice would be 6000k-8000k as this provides a brighter light without being blinding to other road users. The safest bet would be LEDs that are around 8000k to 14000k which is still bright but produces natural white light that does not blind other motorists on the road.

    2) Beam angle vs Type of Fitment .

Most LED replacements with either Standard beam angles or Wide beam angles.

Standard beam angle: This is commonly known as the pencil beam, which provides a sharp focused beam of light. This is great for long distance illumination but may not be suitable for other road users because it can blind them if viewed from the front or oncoming traffic.

Wide Beam Angle: Produces a wider and diffused light but this will reduce your range by about 30%. Be careful with these kinds of LED replacement headlight bulbs as they are considered illegal in some countries. If you are living in an area where you have to abide by the law consider using CREE LED headlights instead of LED Headlights .

    3) What kind of Chip do I need?

There are 3 types of chips that produce different light patterns. Note that you cannot use the same fitting for all 3 types.

    – 1 Chip COB (Chip On Board) Produces one big beam of light, which is good but less effective in terms of range compared to other LEDs with 6 separate chips. The advantage of this chip is that it is long lasting with a 50,000 hour life span.

    – 3 Chip COB This has an extremely bright output and high colour reproduction which makes it ideal for fog lights or daytime running lights . It also provides better illumination in comparison to 1 chip CREE LEDs , so if you are concerned about your visibility at night then this will be suitable for you . These can last up to 30,000 hours on average

    – 6 Chip COB This type of chip is very bright and provides a wide beam angle. It has a longer lifespan in comparison to 3 Chip COBs . The drawback is that it costs more due to having 6 CREE LED chips. 4) How much do LED headlights cost? Prices vary from company to company but generally, expect for your LED replacements to cost at least double the price of their halogen counterparts. Many companies also add extra fittings onto the prices they charge, so always read the fine print when comparing costs

    5) Current Draw vs Power Consumption

The current draw of an LED headlight bulb may be listed in amps or milliamps (mA). You must ensure that the amperage is suitable for your car’s electrical system. This is especially true if it the current required to power up your LEDs exceeds the maximum amperage of your headlights.

LED headlights also use little energy, which means that they are good for the environment . A typical halogen lamp may consume 100 watts , whereas an LED headlight may only require around 20-25 watts of power. However, this will depend on the type of chip used and how powerful it is for example for fog lamps you can find 1w amperages and above but for a standard white bulb (2xHB3) you should look at 10watts and below . The best way to compare would be to take into account an estimate usage over 2 years and divide that by the number watt/amps it uses.

    6) Do LED headlight bulbs have a warranty?

Most reputable companies will provide you with at least 2 years warranty with their products , though some may only give you 1 year . It is best to look for this information when comparing prices with other companies that sell LED headlights . As always, read the fine print.

    7) What are LED replacement Headlight Bulbs ?

LED/Light Emitting Diode replacements come in several forms and can be used as Daytime Running Lights (DRL), Fog lights, Angel eyes or standard headlight fittings (HB3). They can be projector or reflector and even High Intensity Discharge (HID) depending on your car’s configuration.

    8) LED Replacement Headlight Bulb vs Xenon/HID : What are the benefits of using LEDs?

Because they are small, use little energy and focused light beams, LED headlight bulbs create less heat than HID headlights or halogen lamps. They also have a longer lifespan which is around 30,000 hours compared to 8 to 12 months for halogens . This means you save money on installation costs because you won’t need to replace them as often. Another benefit of LEDs is that they produce very little electromagnetic interference (EMI) so your electronics will not be affected by them

Advantages of upgrading to LED/HID technology

    – Save Money: LED/HID lights consume less power and therefore cause your vehicle to use less fuel. This will save you money and help the environment by decreasing CO2 emissions!

    – Increase Visibility: LED/HID bulbs emit a brighter light than standard halogen or xenon bulbs, this gives you better visibility of the road which is always an added bonus for safety! It would be even safer if we could convince all car companies to integrate these as factory equipment on every new car.

    – Longer Life Expectancy: LED/HID bulbs generally last up to 10 times longer than other types of headlights, so there’s no need to replace them often and they will stay cool throughout the lifetime – something that should not be underestimated!

    – Better Design: The look of factory LED/HID headlight sets is a lot more modern and sporty than the traditional type, giving your vehicle a great new look. There are also various styles to choose from, depending on whether you’d like a “JDM” or “Euro” look for example.

    – Make your vehicle stand out from the crowd: With all of these great advantages it’s no surprise that customers want LED/HID headlights – not only do they provide better visibility and safety but they also give your car an individual touch!

    Q&A section

    1. Why is one headlight brighter than the other?

One of the main reasons behind a dim headlight is a corroded ground connection that reduces the light output of the headlight. Your car may be delivering enough power but due to the corrosion, the headlight may not be receiving it.
